Metrocare is the largest provider of mental health, developmental disability and permanent supported housing services in Dallas County serving over 50,000 children, teens and adults annually. For over 55 years, Metrocare has provided a broad array of services from mental health care, primary care, services for veterans and their loved ones, accessible pharmacies, homeless outreach, and supportive social services. Metrocare provides specialty mental health services to over 10,000 children and teens and has numerous programs for babies, children and adults with disabilities, including Early Childhood Intervention, Flourishing Families, Nurturing Parenting, Supported Employment and two specialty autism clinics in Dallas and DeSoto. In conjunction with clinical care, Metrocare’s Altshuler Center for Education & Research is transforming the community mental health landscape of North Texas through workforce development focused on innovative partnerships and exceptional trauma-informed training. 

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

The mission ofMetrocare Services is to serve our neighbors with developmental or mental health challenges by helping them find lives that are meaningful and satisfying. We are an agency committed to quality gender-responsive, trauma-informed care to individuals experiencing serious mental illness, development disabilities, and co-occurring disorders. Metrocare programs focus on the issues that matter most in the lives of the children, families, and adults we serve.

The Flourishing Family program at Metrocare Services provides nurses or qualified home visitors to families with young children, from newborns to three-year-olds. Participants in the program receive evidence-based services, case management, referrals, and developmental and mental health screenings, such as screening for postpartum depression. Family Home Visitors are dedicated to building relationships with parents to support them in building a nurturing and trusting relationship with their child. Those relationships promote healthy child growth and development and support the well-being of the entire family. The Lead Family Home Visitor uses therapeutic home visiting skills such as reflective dialogue to strengthen parent-child relationships, improve parenting skills, teach effective problem solving, and reduce family stress. They also help parents identify and access community resources that will help the family accomplish their goals. The Lead Home Visitor will also serve as a mentor to assigned home visitors and provide support and training as needed. The Lead also provides quality assurance through documentation review and field support.

The Lead Family Home Visitor also does community outreach and provides educational training and groups to support families.

HOURS OF RESPONSIBILITY:

Generally, Monday Friday 8 am 5 pm with some evening hours needed to meet the needs of their caseload.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The essential functions listed here are representative of those that must be met to successfully perform the job.

  • Build trusting relationships with families to engage and retain families in the program.
  • Visit with each family for at least one hour per week until the end of the 8 to 10-week program. (In-person and virtual visits)
  • Provide emotional support and use active listening skills during visits.
  • Prepare and facilitate home visits using all components of the program curriculum.
  • Support positive parent-child interaction and a secure attachment relationship between parent and child.
  • Make referrals to community resources.
  • Model and teach families effective problem-solving skills.
  • Support families to engage in appropriate preventive medical care for themselves and their children.
  • Maintain a professional, supportive relationship with families throughout the course of program.
  • Mentor/train assigned Family Home Visitors.
  • Provides quality assurance through documentation review and field support.
  • Complete community outreach to develop pipeline for family referrals and increase census and community impact.
  • Provide educational training and groups to support families.
  • Attends team meetings and individual supervision as scheduled.
  • Maintain confidentiality and respect for each parent and child as unique individuals.
  • Complete all necessary documentation within the time frame indicated in the program policy.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Required: Bachelor’s degree in counseling, social work, psychology, human development, early childhood development or other related field.
  • Preferred: At least 1 year of demonstrated experience working with or providing services to children and families or working in parent education, home visiting, and/or child development setting.
  • Demonstrated education and/or knowledge of infant and child development.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Basic math skills required.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Open to reflective practice (i.e., has capacity for introspection communicates awareness of self in relation to others, recognizes value of supervision, etc.)
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple one or two-step instructions. Ability to deal with standardized situations with only occasional or no variables.

COMPUTER SKILLS:

  • Use computer, printer, and software programs necessary to the position (i.e., Word, Excel, Outlook, and PowerPoint).
  • Ability to utilize Internet for resources.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS:

  • Current State of Texas Driver License or if you live in another state, must be currently licensed in that state. If licensed in another state, must obtain a Texas Driver License within three (3) months of employment.
  • Liability insurance is required if an employee will operate a personal vehicle on Center property or for Center business. Must be insurable by Center’s liability carrier if employee operates a Center vehicle or drives personal car on Center business. Must have an acceptable driving record.
