General Summary:

Under the direction of the Designated Institutional Official/Vice President of Medical Administration, provides administrative oversight and leadership for undergraduate, graduate, continuing medical education programs, and the medical library. The Director will manage departmental operations and partner with leadership to execute and ensure that strategic initiatives are aligned with overall goals of the University of Michigan Health-West.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Master’s Degree in Education, Behavioral Health, Health Care Administration or related field.
  • Minimum of two (2) years of management experience in healthcare related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of progressively more responsible experience in administration of a medical student, residency, and/or fellowship program.
  • Demonstrated ability to present and gain acceptance of ideas and proposals.
  • Knowledge of finance, accounting, and professional and technical billing.
  • Demonstrated ability to be an effective leader in a complex and dynamic organization.
  • Knowledge in areas of clinical operations and funds flow in the organization.
  • Familiarity with the health care environment and trends.
  • Financial acumen and advanced project management capabilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to think critically, diagnose challenges, and develop resolutions.
  • Ability to communicate, both verbally and in writing, in a clear and concise manner.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize in a fast-paced, rapidly changing environment with success at simultaneously balancing a variety of complex projects.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within a diverse team that seeks to provide excellent client service.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:

  • Oversees the administration of the medical student, residency, and fellowship programs, ensuring compliance with accreditation standards, educational programming and the clinical learning environment.
  • Directs and manages human resource matters for medical education trainees in conjunction with the DIO and program director within the institution, including remediation and disciplinary action.
  • Aligns and develops programs/policies/procedures with institutional and accrediting body standards in conjunction with the DIO and program directors.
  • Manages financial components of Medical Education cost centers. Develops and monitors the annual budgets. In conjunction with the finance and legal department, oversees GME finance issues as well as IRIS reporting, CMS audits, Medicaid Enhanced Reimbursement, and related activities.
  • Participates as an active member of hospital/organizational committee/activities related to the training and education of students, residents, and fellows. Engages residents in quality improvement activities to support organizational efficiencies and patient safety. Active in key departments: Research, Quality, Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and Health Equity as they interface with medical education curriculum and competencies.
  • Supports core competency training for learners and faculty, including facilitating faculty development, core competency series, and ongoing professional development.
  • Serves as a liaison to UM for partnership opportunities related to CME and Residency program education. Develops and maintains relationships with local educational partners and medical schools. Participates in external professional organizations related to Medical Education.
  • Seeks, applies, and manages grants from private, public and local foundations and funding sources.
  • Addresses employment and human resource issues for medical education staff including professional development, hiring, performance evaluation and disciplinary actions.
  • Directs, initiates and monitors departmental contracts; program director, preceptor, affiliations, contracted services, leases, consultants and others as related to Medical Education and Continuing Medical Education.
  • Oversight of educational programs for student, resident, and continuing medical education programs ensuring compliance with all required standards. Seeks innovative methods of education, including simulation, and technology based programming.
  • Manages learner housing, including leases, maintenance, and occupancy.
  • Collaborates with physician services for recruitment and retention of residents.
  • Manages and provides administrative oversight of continuing medical education (CME) accreditation and programming.
  • Directs marketing efforts for the continuum of medical education programs (UME, GME, CME).
  • Oversees library operations, including budget, electronic resources, databases, policies, and institutional needs.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. These may include but are not limited to: Maintaining a current knowledge base of department processes, protocols and procedures, pursuing self-directed learning and continuing education opportunities, and participating on committees, task forces, and work groups as determined by management.
