Position

We are seeking a positive, enthusiastic, multitasker to join our team. The ideal candidate is ambitious and has a passion for helping others. The Medical/Legal Advocate provides support and resources to victims of sexual assault while advocating to end sexual assault and abuse within our community. We have an immediate opening for a self-motivated individual to join on our Sexual Assault Victim’s Care Unit. Under the Director’s supervision, the Medical/Legal Advocate will work independently, resolve problems, exercise judgement, interpret guidelines efficiently and ensure deadlines are met. The Sexual Assault Victims Care Unit is an Illinois Coalition Against Sexual Assault (ICASA) member Rape Crisis Center serving Madison, St. Clair, Jersey, Monroe and Randolph Counties.

Duties

  • Provide confidential crisis intervention and medical/legal advocacy and case management services for the survivors/significant others of sexual assault, sexual abuse or other type of sexual violence to ensure their rights as survivors are upheld.
  • Provide on-call emergency services on a rotating basis with full-time and crisis advocates.
  • Accompany victims to hospitals, law enforcement agencies, States Attorney/Court appointments/proceedings to provide support and information on medical/legal processes.
  • Provide updated/ongoing information to victims and their families on court system progress.
  • Provide Institutional Advocacy and Professional Training to legal and medical agencies as well as within the community.
  • Assist in the establishment of networking agreements with hospitals, law enforcement, social service agencies, and State’s Attorney offices.
  • Remain up-to-date on state and federal laws and ICASA trainings, which have an effect on services and victims of sexual assault/abuse and sexual violence.
  • Provide appropriate referrals to community agencies or individuals seeking assistance.
  • Maintain timely appropriate documentation and record keeping.
  • Assist in the training of new advocates, including job shadowing.
  • Report all findings of abuse/neglect to the immediate supervisor as a mandated reporter.
  • Attend all scheduled staff meetings and assist with fundraising and awareness events.
  • Maintain and abide by the policies and procedures of the Sexual Assault Victims Care Unit and the agency.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or 2 years’ experience in medical/legal field preferred (with minimum of Associates Degree - Experience will be considered).

- A background in education, public communication, or public health is a plus.

- Be subject to a background check and TB test.

  • Ability to use personal vehicle for agency travel/valid Driver’s License and insurance.
  • Be willing to travel throughout the state of Illinois and to St. Louis County, MO to provide advocacy services and to attend trainings.
  • The ability to network, build and grow working professional relationships.
  • Possess the ability to confidently speak in a variety of public settings with diverse populations and various crowd capacities.
