SUMMARY
As part of the Insurance Services team, the primary responsibilities of the Underwriting Assistant include working directly with underwriting to support the processing of new and renewal accounts. This role performs front-to-end activities throughout the lifecycle of an account, from submission to expiration as well as setting up the renewal workflow.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Show basic knowledge about carriers, risk characteristics, loss breakdowns, workers’ compensation guidelines by state, class codes, rating elements, pricing strategies, and underwriting workflow processes.
- Request, collect, follow up, and analyze information from retail agency partners and document it in an underwriting file, carrier system, and/or billing system.
- Pre-underwrite and evaluate risk before the underwriter is required to review and develop initial pricing of risk on behalf of the underwriter by processing new business through rating, AI scoring, and loss/claim breakdowns.
- Review new and renewal account information prior to underwriter review and assess if there is missing information.
- Communicate directly with agency partners to collect account and insured information necessary for evaluation of the account/risk.
- Provide accurate details and documentation to the underwriting team regarding a prospect or existing account.
- Search, track, and verify account detail information such as class codes, payroll/remuneration exposure, experience mods, pricing factors, AI scores, rate changes, endorsement/audit updates, loss control recs and surveys, and complete bind orders.
- Ensure completeness of contents of underwriting rating components for new and renewal business prior to handing over to underwriting for final review.
- Facilitate file documentation by collecting all file requirements on new and renewal business, including, but not limited to, experience mods, loss control surveys, class codes, payroll/remuneration exposures, AI scores, waivers, increased ELL limits, or other pricing consideration factors, etc.
- Develop quote proposals and binder confirmations for all new businesses in conjunction with the underwriter.
- Provide administration support from front to end of an account lifecycle from submission to binding through expiration and renewal, which includes post-bind checklist, endorsements, audits, billing, NOC’s, invoices, reinstatements, cancellations, and/or rewrites.
- Process premium changes for premium bearing change requests and/or provide the proper instructions in the underwriting system accordingly.
- Process and submit any regulatory or bureau-required forms for new and renewal business at the time of binding and/or policy issuance in accordance with the state’s specific requirement(s).
- Communicate account status to ensure completion of outstanding subjectivities to execute policy issuance and premium collection as part of binding accounts.
- Collaborative and engage with underwriters and business development as necessary to collect and maintain pertinent information to ensure there are no gaps in the process, workflows, and the binding/issuance of policies.
- Assist in the preparation and review of account files for carrier and/or reinsurance audits.
- Collaborate and correspond with internal and external contacts across all underwriting programs to achieve a high level of service and meet expectations.
- Document all activity on accounts and communication with agents, underwriting, and business development in the Agency Management System.
- Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements
TECHNICAL SKILLS REQUIRED
- Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite, G Suite, or similar software
- Comprehension of a task-based workflow system to manage prospective and current customers and accounts
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Unless fully remote, this position operates in a professional office setting and routinely uses standard office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers, filing cabinets, and fax machines. This is largely a sedentary role with prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer. However, some filing is necessary and may require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.
POSITION & EXPECTED HOURS
This is a full-time, hourly, non-exempt position. Typical work hours and days are Monday through Friday, from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Some flexibility in hours is allowed, however, the employee must be available during the "core" work hours of 9:30 am to 3:30 pm and must work 37.5 hours each week.
TRAVEL
No travel is expected.
REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
- Bachelor’s degree in business or related field mandatory.
