Description

Metcalf Archaeological Consultants, Inc. is accepting applications for Crew Chiefs on several projects located primarily in Montana and North Dakota, though there may be some fieldwork in Colorado, Utah, and Wyoming as well. Work for this position is expected to start with the field season in April or May. Crew Chiefs perform field work and other tasks under the direction of a Project Manager or Project Director, usually supervising a small field crew and conducting surveys, testing, and data recovery excavations. Laboratory and office tasks may also be assigned as necessary.

These are full-time, hourly positions. Projects may require extended field time, typically on a 9 days on, 5 days off schedule, although schedules will vary from project to project. Per-diem (typically $55 per day) and lodging are provided for all project work requiring overnight stays away from your home office. The pay rate will be $21 - $24 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. Hours worked in excess of 40 per week are paid at an overtime rate of time and a half.

Tasks

• Direct and coordinate activities of an archaeological field crew on large, multiple session projects
• Assume the role and responsibilities of project supervisor on small, short-term projects as assigned
• Direct work activities in accordance with the project scope, budget, agency requirements, and schedule
• Plan and direct project activities pertaining to surveys, site testing, and site excavations
• Record and map discoveries during surface inventories Create or update maps of units and profiles
• Maintain accurate, organized, and legible project data, field notes, and production records
• Ensure crew members report work hours accurately
• Ensure crew members are enabled and productive
• Track project costs as necessary; this can include crew member per diem and personal expenses
• Provide recommendations to the Project Supervisor regarding the evaluation of cultural resources
• Write and/or contribute to technical reports and conduct analytical tasks appropriate to agency standards
• Confer with supervisors and subordinates to resolve staff interpersonal problems
• Oversee the cleaning and routine maintenance of vehicles and equipment used for projects
• Comply with internal and client-required safety programs

• Able to work outdoors for 10 or more hours a day in often very hot (90 °F) and very cold (<32-°F) temperatures; other conditions include high winds, extreme dust, and high altitude
• Must be able to walk numerous miles in a work period, often in rugged terrain
• Must be able to systematically excavate natural soil strata using hand tools, to include shovels and trowels
• Must be able to dig, kneel, and crouch for extended periods of time
• Able to lift at least 40 lbs. and maintain physical fitness adequate to tasks
• Willing to spend several days at remote work locations during the field season

Requirements

• B.A. in Anthropology or History (commensurate field experience will be accepted in lieu of a degree)
• M.A. or M.S. in Anthropology is highly desirable but not required for this position
• Demonstrated experience in performing Crew Chief duties
• Demonstrated knowledge of state and federal regulations including the Section 106 process
• Currently listed, or able to be listed, as person in direct charge of fieldwork in a secondary supervisor, on antiquities permits in at least one state within the company’s operating region. 
• Active First Aid/CPR certification (may be obtained after hiring)
• Experience writing and producing quality, professional site forms and reports
• At least two years of experience doing archaeological fieldwork
• At least one year of experience supervising a field crew is preferred
