General Summary: This position is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the melt operations and all applicable equipment
  • Shift Premium: $1.50/hr 2nd shift (1:55 PM - 9:55 PM); $1/hr 3rd shift (9:55 PM - 5:55 AM)

Essential Functions:
  • Operate iron transport crane system, assist with furnace charging activities, and slag furnaces.
  • Responsible for casting and maintaining of refractory lining of ladles, pig beds, furnaces, and related iron-handling surfaces.
  • Record data including heat temperatures, weights, carbon/silicon levels, alloys added, etc.
  • Prepares tundish ladle prior to tapping iron from furnace by adding alloys according to recipe.
  • Safe and efficient operation of overhead cranes (when assigned) to weigh a mix of steel scrap, pig iron and remelt to achieve proper charge mix.
  • Keep material bins clean and orderly.
  • Refers to daily production schedule for proper charge mix.
  • Responsible for casting and maintaining of refractory lining of ladles, pig beds, and related iron-handling surfaces.
  • Refers to daily production schedule for proper furnace analysis and temperature.
  • Pour melt lab samples, records analysis and make necessary adjustments to maintain required chemical/metallurgical specifications.
  • Takes furnace temperatures and adjusting temperature as required.
  • Removes slag from furnace, launder, and other surfaces as needed.
  • Taps iron from furnace when melt cycle is completed and iron is required by molding department.
  • Operates furnaces in an efficient and safe manner.
  • Follows work instructions for start-up and shut down of furnaces.
  • Adds proper inoculation for each charge to maintain customer specifications as per work instructions.
  • Keep records, logs, and /or charts as required.
  • Weekend work is usually required.
  • Maintains a clean and orderly work area.
  • May be assigned other duties as needed.
  • Required PPE: safety glasses, ear plugs, and kick off steel toed boots or spats with non-kick off style, gloves, hard hat, face shield, flame retardant uniforms.
Experience Required
  • Previous melt experience preferred
Work Schedule/Job Rotation/Breaks: 8 hour shifts with 4 hours overtime allowed (12 hours max/day), repair weekends on rotation schedule. Rotate between different duties
Work Environment: Inside and outside, noisy, dusty – sand and metal airborne particulate. Work in close proximity to molten iron. Radiant heat and warm temperatures in department, climate changes with weather when going outside to take care of some duties
Tools: Air hammers/chisels, temperature probes, skimmers, shovels, sledge hammers, hand tools, trowels, brooms, chains, ladders and rebar
