Position Description
Position Summary
The Office of Campus Ministries creates opportunities for students to engage in meaningful Christian worship, discipleship, and spiritual formation. The Discipleship Pastor supports the office’s goals as part of a three-person pastoral ministry team, providing an emphasis on undergraduate student discipleship. The Discipleship Pastor trains and mentors student leaders engaged in a variety of peer-to-peer ministries, serves as a discipleship and pastoral care resources for students, and collaborates with the Campus Ministries team in chapel planning and leadership.
Education Required
Master of Divinity or related master’s degree

Experience Required
4 years experience in ministry and related administrative duties, including mentoring and training/equipping others and ministry to college/university students

  • Demonstrated theological knowledge and understanding with skills and experience in various expressions of ministry, including discipleship, evangelism, missions, and pastoral care
  • Ability to foster and nurture spiritual growth in individuals and in a community
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the stages of student development, faith development, and the importance of holistic education
  • Strong written and oral communication skills, including public speaking
  • Ability and desire to develop relationships with students from a wide range of cultural and theological backgrounds
  • Strong administrative and organizational skills, including the ability to manage multiple projects and programs simultaneously and to hold students accountable to their responsibilities
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor young adults, encouraging leadership and reflective growth
  • Strong skills in teaching, training, and equipping others for ministry
  • Demonstrated commitment to continued learning and professional development
  • Demonstrated ability to articulate a biblical vision of racial reconciliation and human sexuality to contribute to the advancement of Messiah University’s mission of training reconcilers for church and society

Primary Duties
1. Provide spiritual leadership and pastoral care for the campus community as part of a three-person pastoral ministry team focused on serving undergraduate students.
2. Work collaboratively with the Campus Ministries team to plan and implement spiritual formation opportunities aimed at meeting the Division of Student Success and Engagement and Campus Ministries student learning outcomes, including chapel programming.
3. Regularly participate in chapel services, including preaching on occasion.
4. Serve as the faculty/staff advisor for Student Ministries, ensuring the organization operates within SGA guidelines and reaches a growing number of students on campus with a variety of peer-to-peer ministries (e.g., small groups, prayer ministry, women’s/men’s ministry, missions/evangelism, special events).
5. Oversee the application, hiring, and training process for all Student Ministries leaders, including at least one mandatory training retreat.
6. Provide ongoing equipping and mentoring for Student Ministries leaders and teams through one-on-one meetings, group advising, providing resources, leading retreats and workshops, etc.
7. Serve as the Experiential Learning Initiative (ELI) advisor for Student Ministries leaders receiving ELI credit.
8. Oversee assessment of student learning delivered through Student Ministries programming.
9. Share responsibility for representing Campus Ministries in educational programming, admissions events, and various university-wide committees.
10. Engage in the larger campus student care network and serve as a confidential pastoral care resource, compliant with anonymous reporting and community resourcing requirements under Title IX, Clery Act, and VAWA regulations.
11. Maintain consistent and reliable attendance.
Secondary Duties
1. Serve as a member of the Community of Educators, collaborating with curricular and cocurricular educators and programs toward creating a holistic learning environment.
2. Build and maintain positive relationships with local churches and ministry leaders as opportunities arise.
