SUMMARY

Lays out, positions, aligns, fits together and welds fabricated parts of structural metal products in shop.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  1. Skills to produce assigned work according to ASME and Merrick Quality designations.
  2. Skills to complete .045 E71-T, FCAW, 3G Vertical and .045 E308-L, MIG, 2G Horizontal Weld Certification tests.
  3. Ability to read blueprints efficiently and accurately.
  4. Ability to use a tape measure accurately.
  5. Ability to produce assigned work in allotted time.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Works from blueprints and uses fixtures to assemble frame, body and some machinable parts. 
  • Sets up face block, jigs and fixtures as needed.
  • Locates and marks centerlines and reference points onto floor or face block and transpose them to work piece. Moves a part into position and aligns parts.
  • Removes high spots and cuts bevels. Straightens warped or bent parts.
  • Positions or tightens braces, jacks, clamps, ropes, or bolt straps, or bolts parts in positions for welding or riveting.
  • Uses numerous fixtures, clamps, bolts, jack, hand tools, measuring devices, arc welder, mig welder, hand grinder, burning torch, and gas welder. 
  • Ability to work in a constant state of alertness and safe manner.
  • Functions in a workplace of dignity and respect for all.
  • Functions as a team member and to get along with others.
  • Honors EEO guidelines and principles.
  • Reports for work on time as scheduled and ready to perform.
  • Performs other similar or related duties as directed, assigned or as necessary to accomplish the department’s objectives in an effective manner.

Requirements

SAFETY AND ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Accountable for all concerns within their scope of work and has the absolute responsibility to remedy, report and/or communicate any issue to managers, supervisors, safety or environmental managers as appropriate.
  • Follows all safe work practices, watches out for fellow workers, and keeps their work area clean. 
  • Ensures area remains compliant regarding hazardous waste, non-hazardous waste and universal waste.
  • The following personal protection equipment is required and must be worn while working in the manufacturing facility or customers’ facilities: 
  1. Company approved safety glasses or goggles
  2. Company approved steel/composite toe shoes.
  3. Appropriate hand protection, respiratory and hearing protection in designated areas.
  4. Appropriate clothing and other safety equipment as required.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or general education degree (GED); Must have apprenticeship or on the job training of at least one year, Trade or Technical School certificate or Diploma; or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • LANGUAGE SKILLS: Ability to read and interpret documents such as operating and maintenance instructions, procedure manuals.
  • MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to use a tape measure and to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals. Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as area, circumference, and Volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • REASONING ABILITY: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
  • COMPUTER AND SOFTWARE SKILLS: Visual scanning system.
  • EQUIPMENT: Overhead and jib cranes, forklift, weld machines, burning torch, grinder, measuring devices, and power and hand tools.
  • CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS: .045 E71-T, FCAW, 3G Vertical and .045 E308-L, MIG, 2G Horizontal Weld Certifications.
