  • Summary
    • This position supports Mercy's philosophy of patient centered care by serving as the technical consultant and providing technical and scientific oversight of all Mercy Physician Services (MPS) Laboratories. The Outreach Consultant provides billing, reimbursement, and CPT coding expertise to MMC Laboratory Administration and laboratory clients.
  • Job Duties/Essential Functions
    • Job Duties
      • Ensures that accurate and clinically relevant information is communicated with patients, their families, and co-workers at hand offs and other times as needed. Take all measures necessary to ensure that the appropriate and involved parties have communicated necessary information in order to allow for the best possible patient outcome
      • Selects test methodology and verifies test procedures performed and the establishment of the laboratory's test
      • Ensures enrollment and participation in an approved proficiency testing program commensurate with the services offered
      • Establishes a quality control program appropriate for the testing performed and establishing the parameters for acceptable levels of analytic performance
      • Ensures the quality program levels are met throughout each phase of the testing process, including pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical
      • Resolves technical problems and ensuring that remedial actions are taken when test systems deviate from established performance specifications
      • Ensures that patient test results are not reported until all corrective actions have been taken and the test system is functioning properly
      • Identifies training needs and assuring that each individual performing tests received regular in-service training and education appropriate to the type and complexity of laboratory services performed
      • Evaluates competency of all testing personnel according to CLIA regulations and assures that staff maintain their competency to perform test procedures and report test results promptly, accurately and proficiently
      • Maintains appropriate maintenance, quality control, etc. records per guidelines
      • Prepares MPS labs for successful inspection by regulatory agencies.
      • Acts as the point of contact for all billing issues, manually bill accounts, research and process all rejections, and work with appropriate financial services staff to correct accounts and billing as needed.
      • Assists MMC and MPS Laboratories with CPT coding and chargemaster updates.
      • Reconciles reference lab billing statements

  • Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Knowledge of laboratory testing procedures and methods
    • Knowledge of regulatory requirements, including CLIA and OSHA
    • Knowledge of CPT coding and laboratory billing regulations
    • Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and work with interruptions
    • Skill to use standard laboratory instrumentation
    • Skill to use the laboratory information system (LIS)
    • Ability to recognize and correct problems with quality control
    • Ability to recognize problems and assist in troubleshooting laboratory equipment
    • Ability to detail-oriented
    • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively with organizational leadership, physicians, and staff
    • Ability to complete appropriate documentation and paperwork clearly and completely
    • Ability to lead and/or facilitate teams and/or projects toward successful achievement of goals.
  • Professional Experience
    • Required: At least 2 years in a moderately complex or higher clinical laboratory setting
    • Preferred: Previous physician office laboratory, billing, and/or compliance experience
  • Education
    • Required: Bachelor's degree in medical laboratory, biological, or chemical science
  • Licensure, Certification, Registration
    • Required: Certification as an MLS(ASCP), MT(ASCP), or MT(AMT)
    • Required: Valid driver's license and proof of insurance.
  • Physical Demand Requirements
    • Light: Exert up to 20 lbs. of force occasionally and/or up to 10 lbs. of force frequently
