Job Duties

  • Collaborates and communicates with employers, insurance companies, third party groups, and case managers regarding the status of employee injury visits and/or results of testing/physicals for employment.
  • Completes all nursing documentation and visit charges in a timely manner.
  • Participates in departmental meetings/updates and presents the needs and concerns of the occupational health nurse role.
  • Advises on quality and safety improvement ideas to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations related to required training programs, lab procedures and general occupational medicine processes.
  • Orders supplies for the clinic/provider when needed.
  • Trains new employees and/or students.
  • Identifies operational issues and proposes solutions to management as needed.
  • Obtains prior authorizations for additional testing/referrals needed for those patients that are seen for injuries in the workplace.
  • Collects workers compensation insurance information and/or self pay billing requirements from employers/patients.
  • Performs occupational health nursing duties to include, but not limited to, drug screens, breath alcohols, hearing tests, vision tests, agility tests, and spirometry tests.
  • Performs all laboratory procedures up to moderately complex as assigned by clinic.
  • Performs nursing duties to include rooming patients, taking vitals, collecting medical history, performing EKG exams, and assisting provider with procedures.
  • Follows Mercy's safety guidelines, carries out job-specific safety duties and responsibilities, and promptly reports any unsafe conditions, situations, incidents and injuries.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Understanding of general nursing policies and procedures related to occupational health needs.
  • Detail oriented to comply with client specifications and needs.
  • Knowledge of state and federal nursing and occupational health regulations.
  • Computer skills, including electronic health record.
Professional Experience
  • Required: 1-2 years of experience performing general nursing functions in a clinical setting.
    Preferred: Experience in occupational health.
Education
  • Baccaloureate degree in nursing preferred.
Licensure, Certification, Registration
  • Current license to practice as a registered nurse in the state of Iowa or compact state required.
  • Current certification in Basic Life Support (BLS), in accordance with the American Heart Association required.
  • Occupational Health Nurse or Case Manager Certification preferred.
  • Iowa Dependent Adult Abuse & Iowa Child Abuse Mandatory Reporter training required. Employee must submit certification of completed training to Human Resources prior to start or transfer date.
Visual Acuity
  • Work requires close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to read pertinent printed materials and distinguish colors.
  • Ability to include inspection during patient assessment.
  • Ability to accurately read measurements on patient related equipment - some examples include: thermometers, mechanical gauges, glucometers, IV pumps, and computer monitor displays.
  • Ability to read management reports or other pertinent printed material.
  • Work requires analyzing data and figures, use of computer terminal and extensive reading.
  • Worker must be able to visually assess patients' safety needs.
  • Normal visual acuity required to maintain accuracy and neatness of work.
  • Preparing and reading written documentation, use of computer.
  • Peripheral vision.
