Mercer Island School District 400 is Hiring a 2425 - Special Education Teacher - Elementary Pool Near Mercer Island, WA

This posting is a pool posting for all certificated special education positions in our elementary special education programs.

The District’s special education service delivery model provides students with a continuum of instructional programs, including specially designed instruction in the general education setting and in-district special education programs including: resource, personalized learning, and EBD programs.

Please note that the salary range indicated is the 2023-24 salary schedule and will be adjusted as new bargained agreement is reached.

The position is eligible for health benefits through the School Employee Benefits Board (SEBB) and retirement through the Department of Retirement Services (DRS).

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor's degree
  • Possess or qualify for immediate issuance of a valid Washington State teaching certificate with a special education endorsement
  • Experience working in a multi-cultural environment preferred

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of behavior management strategies
  • Knowledge of IEP process and the writing of goals/objectives and behavior intervention plans
  • Ability to instruct in multiple languages preferred
  • Skills in oral and written communication
  • Strong organizational skills
  • Ability to work with other members of a school or department to accomplish common goals
  • Ability to perform in accordance with applicable board policies and district and legal requirements
  • Demonstrates a commitment to equity through culturally relevant teaching practices through the design and implementation of instruction and high expectations for all students
  • Provides high quality instruction through knowledge of differentiated instructional practices and data-driven instructional decision-making.
  • Ability and skills necessary to individualize instruction. Commitment and ability to work with a full range of students including gifted, mainstreamed special education, English language learners, and students from diverse cultural and social backgrounds
  • Ability to develop students’ technology literacy
  • Ability to work in a collaborative or team approach
  • Ability to communicate effectively, professionally, collaboratively and positively with students, parents, and colleagues, orally and in writing
  • Ability to work with students in multi-aged groups
  • Ability to use varied assessments, including performance tasks, portfolios, and student self-assessment
  • Attends ongoing professional development activities, such as college course work, professional associations, workshops, and in-service opportunities
  • Exhibits a strong and positive attitude with the belief that each student can be taught and has the right and capacity to achieve personal academic excellence
  • Ability to perform all duties in accordance with applicable board policies and district and legal requirements

WORKING CONDITIONS

Required to deal with a wide range of student achievement and behavior; required to remain flexible to meet students immediate needs; required to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and prioritize; may experience frequent interruptions; may occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students; potentially exposed to ordinary infectious diseases carried by students; in some positions the necessary and appropriate instructional methods may require specific positions and movements, and sufficient stamina and exertions, to demonstrate techniques properly for student safety, or to conduct or direct students; in some positions precautions may need to be taken to prevent or lessen exposure of self and/or students to various materials, fumes, equipment, cutting edges or hot surfaces; may teach in a classroom without telephone communication.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, finger dexterity, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and repetitive motions. This position may be exposed to prolonged exposure to visual display terminals as required.
Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, odors, chemicals, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, and intense noises.
