Memphis-Shelby County Schools is Hiring a Transition Specialist- Evening Reporting Center-PART-TIME Near Memphis, TN

Purpose and Scope:

Provides and builds a sustainable model for career exploration and readiness for juvenile justice youth. Evaluates participants’ needs, prepares and implements plans to assist in addressing behavioral, social, psychological and career readiness issues. Provides individual and group counseling and consultations with teachers and other professionals. Maintains accurate and complete case records.

Essential Job Functions:
  • In consultation with school-based and community partners, identifies student cohorts for project participation. Identifies factors in student's home, school or community that may impact student's education and career training success. Interviews students. Develops and distributes interest surveys and performs academic and behavioral reviews. Develops career readiness plans which address the holistic needs of student s.
  • Facilitates implementation and compliance of intensive support and career readiness services provided to students. Monitors the integrity of academic and behavior support services and interventions related to contract goals and objectives such as progress reviews, performance based measurements, academic tutoring and assessment r Holds regular progress review meetings and reports of service interventions.
  • Provides parent and teacher consultations to address management of the student's progress in the areas of academic, behavior, social, communication and career readiness skills. Holds parent conferences, teacher conferences, student conferences and assessment reviews.
  • Develops and facilitates the transition process from juvenile facilities to re-entry into an academic and career education and readiness setting for juvenile justice Creates individual transition plans, develops participant portfolio and coordinates school enrollment.
  • Serves as advocate for students and a liaison between the schools and the appropriate agencies providing services to juvenile justice students in need of additional Plans meetings, monitors Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreements, prepares verbal and written correspondence.
  • Facilitates development of collaborative programs with social, community, mental health and workforce readiness Serves as advocate for ongoing and improved community, court and school services to meet the needs of students and families. Collaborates with project partners through planning, progress meetings, professional development and training,
  • Facilitates completion of processes and procedures related to grant specific, planned activities.
  • Provides individual and group interventions and counseling for students related to student performance and program standards, as well as family counseling when appropriate. Arranges individual student and group projects, and extended learning
  • Gathers information to support periodic and special reports documenting activities related to program goals and objectives such as progress reports, annual program progress review, database and evaluation monitoring
  • Conducts staff or project partner professional meetings to exchange information related to completion of program goals and objectives such as Shelby County Government
  • Assesses program effectiveness and efficiency such as project review analysis, consultation with project staff, partners and participants, benchmark surveys, interviews and Makes recommendations for improvement in project areas of opportunity.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or directed.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited college with an Associate’s Degree in Social Science, Education or a related area plus an additional two (2) years related experience working with at-risk youth, juvenile justice and/or Career Readiness education for a total education/experience of four (4) years. Valid state driver's license required. Bachelor’s degree in Social Science area, Education or related area preferred.
Degree Equivalency Formula:
Bachelor’s Degree= 4 years plus required years of experience.
Master’s Degree= 6 years plus required years of experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Strong analytic and problem-solving skills, with the ability to swiftly and accurately understand complex data and perform analysis
  • Skill in analyzing data & evaluating options &, devising pragmatic solutions to problems and making recommendations
  • Ability to analyze data, draw conclusions, suggest options and prepare recommendations. Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to tackle the operational challenges of a large urban school district in a complex, changing political and educational environment
  • Ability to manage daily administrative tasks without losing sight of long-term goals and planning
  • Knowledge of special education laws and regulations
Physical Requirements and Working Environment:

Physical Demands: Requires sedentary work involving standing or walking for brief periods, exerting up to 10 pounds of force on a regular basis; and some dexterity in operating office equipment; must be able to use hands and fingers

Unavoidable Hazards: The position is exposed to no unusual environmental hazards.

Sensory (ADA) Requirements: The position requires normal visual acuity and field of vision, hearing and speaking abilities.
