  • JOB SUMMARY
    • A Nurse Practitioner (NP) is an advanced practice nurse that helps with all aspects of patient care, including diagnosis, treatments and consultations. May work in both inpatient and outpatient situations and can perform independently or as part of a treatment team. Generally, nurse practitioner will perform the important task of educating patients about preventative care and prescribed treatments. Conduct physicals, order tests and serve as a patient's primary healthcare provider. Some nurse practitioners are also able to prescribe medications.
  • JOB QUALIFICATIONS
    • Education:
      • High School diploma or equivalent required. Licensure is obtained by completing a Master’s degree in Nursing and current licensure as a Nurse Practitioner as well as National Certification which requires the successful completion of a nationally accredited examination. All Nurse Practitioners must be appropriately credentialed through the Medical Staff Credentialing process and abide by all Medical Staff Bylaws and Rules & Regulations. Certification in ACLS/BLS/NRP/ATLS may be required by your department or by privileging criteria.
    • Job Knowledge and Skills:
      • Demonstrated clinical competence and in-depth knowledge of specialty area; and demonstrated leadership, teaching, research and communication skills are required.
      • A Nurse Practitioner may perform those duties and responsibilities delegated to him or her by the supervising physician, within the scope of the physician’s practice and expertise, and within the skills of the Nurse Practitioner.
      • A Nurse Practitioner’s supervising physician must be readily available to assess and intervene with patients being seen by their supervised Nurse Practitioner. Patient care will be supervised either in person or via tele-communications.
      • In the supervisor’s absence (nonavailability), physician cross coverage may be considered as authorized Nurse Practitioner supervision with formally approved physician supervision through state licensure.
      • If supervising physician has admitting privileges, Nurse Practitioner may admit (but not discharge) to that supervising physician, but may not admit patients to himself or herself. The supervising physician must personally document a face-to-face evaluation of patient on the day of discharge, prior to discharge.
      • Without specific credentialing for additional duties, may only perform the following:
        • Admission History and Physicals Routine day-to-day monitoring of inpatients, including appropriate medical record notes, dictated summaries and orders for tests and treatments.
        •  Evaluation of patients in the Emergency Department.
