As an important member of the Manufacturing team, you will lead the strategy, operating mechanisms, and continuous improvement deployment for Operational Excellence (OpEx) at the Tempe Site. This role will support training deployment strategy and execution across the operation for NEO and onboarding. You will be an integral part of transforming the organization and driving culture change. This role will report into the VP of Manufacturing at the Tempe Site.

The Tempe site is a Technology Development Center specializing in micro-electronics and sensors, responsible for helping patients through the anticipation, development & manufacture of solutions that matter. The Tempe site supports 8 operating business unit partners across ~6 manufacturing value streams.

A Day in the Life

You will manage the Operational Excellence (OpEx) function for the Tempe Manufacturing Site, deploying the Medtronic Performance System (MPS) (One Best Way) to meet the site’s short- and long-term goals for improved quality performance, increased service levels, reduced COGS, improved operational efficiency and EHS performance goals. This role supports ~$375MM cost of production which delivers ~$7.0B of revenue.

As OpEx site Director, you will:

  • Partner with Site Leadership Team to manage short- & long-term vision and execution plans for the Operational Excellence function at the site.
  • In partnership with the Electronic Technologies & China Manufacturing Platform OpEx team, manage Operational Excellence programs and initiatives at the site for short- and long-term goal achievement, assuring culture and systems development in support of continuous improvement in cost and quality performance.
  • Manage MPS deployment and maturity at the site. Key driver in policy deployment and standardization.
  • Establish and maintain a site-wide culture of continuous improvement and Operations excellence including Site Leadership level policy deployment, tiered communications, and related operating mechanisms.
  • Actively participate in operations and technology strategic planning to ensure new product development and manufacturing process changes are being optimized and designed for manufacturability.
  • Lead site-wide cost reduction program targeted at reducing operational costs by 5% yearly.
  • Drive site capital implementation plans to ensure strategic execution by utilizing model-based capacity learning and projected demand.
  • Coach, educate, and build organizational capabilities as defined within the MPS global operational excellence program.
  • Manage Lean Sigma Training & Certification Program deployment site-wide while
  • Coach, motivate and foster professional development of direct reports.
  • Deploy team engineering resources across the site to support continuous improvement activities and leverage lean manufacturing capabilities to drive operational efficiency and lead time reduction.
  • Drive implementation of Operating Mechanisms across the site (Tier Management, PMO/cost hopper, etc.)
  • Ownership of training strategy and execution associated with NEO (New employee orientation) and onboarding.
Must Have: Minimum Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree required 
  • 10 years of relevant experience with 7 years of managerial experience, or advanced degree with 8 years of relevant experience with 7 years of managerial experience
  • OpEx/Lean Six Sigma experience
Nice to Have
  • Manufacturing execution experience
  • Ability to manage cross functionally with direct and indirect influence
  • Ability to Coach and facilitate individually and at the large-scale level
  • Experience in facilitation at all levels of organization, and leading change through cross-functional teams in a matrix organization
  • Experience analyzing complex issues and making recommendations to improve, change or adapt exiting methods.
  • Experience with establishing Voice of Operations/Voice of Customer in PDP process
  • Process improvement and cost savings success
  • Lean/Six Sigma BB/MBB certification
  • Advanced skills in statistical software packages
  • Knowledge of and exposure to manufacturing and/or engineering processes and to lean sigma/total quality management methodologies
  • Proven knowledge and experience in integrating a Quality Based and continuous improvement culture change.
  • Solid understanding of Engineering, Project Management, Lean Principles, Six Sigma, Financial acumen.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, with ability to interface and influence at various levels of organization
  • Self-starter, works independently and maintains positive, enthusiastic attitude

Organizational Relationship/Scope:

Close working relationships and consensus building are required with all other Site management staff (Operations managers, Finance, Quality)

The OpEx leader is responsible for the coordination of processes and resources in cross-functional, operations activities within the site.
