Job Summary:

MedStar Health is looking for a Director of Athletic Training Services to join our team! 

The Director of Athletic Training Services position assist MedStar Health Physical Therapy leaders, and leadership across the interdisciplinary MedStar Health Sports Medicine program, with strategic growth, evolution, program development, service enhancement, selected physician extender services, and targeted community outreach of our certified athletic training (ATC) services. This position also provides direct supervision, and clinical mentoring, to ATC's. This includes having supervisory oversight of multiple locations, venues, or ATC clinical practice environments to coordinate programs and services across large regions. Special emphasis will be placed on tactical sports medicine-based community outreach initiatives, working closely with physicians and internal and external leaders.

Primary Duties:

  • Selects, trains, and assigns staff. Develops standards of performance, evaluates, and conducts performance management planning. Makes recommendations for personnel actions. Fosters ongoing communication with subordinates to review programs, provide feedback, discuss new developments or opportunities, exchange information, support associate enrichment, and promote employee job satisfaction. Collaborates with leadership and appropriate physicians, develops department goals, objectives, policies, and procedures. Provides leadership/support to achieve program goals. Provides education and mentoring to staff and students. Supervises, monitors, promotes quality improvement, and enhances growth opportunities for Certified Athletic Trainers.

  • Maintains relationships with other departmentsand participates in multi-disciplinary outreach initiatives. In collaboration with MHPT leadership, develops and recommends department operating budget, managing resources accordingly. Ensures compliance with policies, procedures, and governmental/accreditation regulations. Manages daily operations with consistent focus on early and expedient access to care, including ensuring appropriate staffing, controlling expenses, managing schedules, and assuring efficient processes.

  • Completes scheduling, coordination, and execution of athletic training coverage including staffing, physician intervention, support of other departments, supplies, services, and transportation. Collaborates with the Athletic Training team and Physical Therapy Program Specialists on the design and administration of sports medicine services for outside groups, clubs, and organizations. Advances professional knowledge to ensure quality care and program excellence. Enhances growth and development, enriching personal knowledge and skills through participation in educational programs, in-services, workshops, and independent learning experiences.

  • Prevents, recognizes, evaluates athletes/patients, identifies limitations, injuries, and illnesses. Determines how specific problems interfere with function and/or performance. Targets critical issues. Evaluates results to refer to MedStar physicians and therapists, who collaborate to establish a plan of treatment/care. Utilizes standard techniques to evaluate, plan, coordinate, and document applicable plans of care/treatment. Determines an individual's readiness to participate in athletics. Demonstrates knowledge and skills in use of rehabilitative equipment, techniques, and exercise protocols.

  • Prepares reports on Athletic Training results and referral activity, sharing results with appropriate parties. Recognizes top performance and effectively addresses any performance or volume concerns. Facilitates with Athletic Trainers, Physicians, and Practice Managers excellent physician extender services where targeted. When functioning as a physician extender, acts as a physician-patient liaison in both surgical and non-surgical conditions in conveying instructions and information. Responsible for ensuring that the physician’s care plans and protocols are understood and adhered to by the patient and supporting staff.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from accredited college or university in Athletic Training.

  • 10 years as a certified athletic trainer.

  • 5-7 years supervisory or progressively more responsible lead experience.

  • ATC certification by the National Athletic Trainers’ Association Board of Certification.

  • Eligible for license in Maryland and Virginia and eligible to practice in the District of Columbia.

  • Basic Life Support (BLS).

  • 3-4 years' experience within MNRN preferred.

  • Master’s degree preferred.
