medstar-pilot is Hiring a Nurse Practitioner Spine Unit (Georgetown) Near Washington, DC

NeurosurgicalSpine SurgeryMedStar Georgetown has designated C5-3 as the adult spine surgery unit. Currently, this 14-bedadult unit is part of MedStar Georgetown’s nationally renowned NeurosciencesCenter of Excellence. C5-3 nurses work collaboratively with members of thehealthcare team to provide high-quality, patient-centered, specialty care. Theincumbent will be responsible for providing professional nursing services tothe neurosurgical spine surgery patients on C5-3 as well as neurosurgical spinesurgery patients on various medical/surgical and intermediate care units. The Neurosurgicalspine surgery patient population will move to the state of the art MedicalSurgical Pavilion in Fall 2023.

Position Summary
The incumbent is a registeredprofessional nurse practitioner who is responsible for providing professionalnursing services that supplement and complement the professional nursing staffand the medical staff's delivery of patient care services. These functions are performed in accordancewith all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown UniversityHospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

Schedule

  • Schedule: M-F, Days. 5 days a week preferred, four days a week considered.

Qualifications

Education

  • Masters Degree in Nursing or Nurse Practitioner program from an accredited School of Nursing, required.

Work Experience

  • 1-2 years previous acute care or medical/surgical experience, preferred

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Judgment and leadership skills; excellent interpersonal skills; must be mature, able to set priorities and work independently; must be able to articulate procedures to patients and families; excellent physical assessment skills.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Current license as a Registered Nurse in the state or jurisdiction of the facility seeking employment, required.
  • Current license as a Nurse Practitioner in the state or jurisdiction of the facility seeking employment, required.
  • NPC - Certified Nurse Practitioner, required
  • ACNP - AACN Acute Care Nurse Practitioner, preferred
  • BLS-Basic Life Support, required.
  • Advanced life support certification based on the patient population served (ie. ACLS, PALS), required

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

CLINICAL PRACTICE

  • Performs evaluation including physical examination, ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic testing, obtaining informed consent for procedures and providing patient education.
  • Provides comprehensive care utilizing protocols and assists physicians/house staff in ongoing patient management as needed.
  • Performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in accordance with standards.
  • Notifies appropriate physician(s) of abnormal test findings and participates in defining and implementing the plan of care in response to findings.
  • Participates in interpretation of diagnostic studies as part of the multidisciplinary team.
  • Provides case management services to patients and coordinates discharge planning and patient education in collaboration with appropriate physicians and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Maintains open communication with referring physicians by providing patient updates and recommendations for discharge planning.
  • Participates in and assists with research protocols and patient recruitment for studies approved to be conducted at MedStar Georgetown University Hospital.
  • Provides patient and family education about procedures performed, ongoing care needs related to procedures, and disease management.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities by developing evidence-based protocols and guidelines in collaboration with other members of the team; attending monthly Morbidity and Mortality Conference; and participating in other departmental meetings and conferences regularly.
  • Conducts follow-up contacts with patients, as appropriate.
