Promotes exemplary professional practice that is evidence-based and is characterized by collaborative governance and participative decision making at MGUH. This individual, along with MGUH Chief Nursing Officer, supports the MedStar Health (MSH) professional practice model through the local implementation of the MSH Nursing Strategic Plan and the annual Nursing fiscal year goals. Special emphasis is placed on the provision of patient and family-centric care using standards of nursing practice afforded by nursing professional organizations and evidence-based clinical practice guidelines.The Director of Nursing Practice Innovation reports directly to the MSH Vice President of Nursing Practice Innovation and has a matrix reporting structure to MGUH Chief Nursing Officer or delegate. The Director of Nursing Practice Innovation has accountability for MGUH clinical nurse specialists or clinical specialists.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

Nursing Practice:

  • Provides local oversight for the adoption and sustained integration of the MedStar Health nursing care delivery model and interdisciplinary model of care.
  • Promotes local action/adoption and the sustained integration of evidence-based clinical practices and guidelines by clinical nurses.
  • Provides oversight for the sustained integration of MGUH Nursing Practice Council(s) and incorporates locally the recommendations of MSH Collaborative Governance Councils and Nursing Specialty Committees.
  • Maintains an active role in the MSH Nursing Practice Innovation Committee (NPIC) including acting as a chair of a NPIC subcommittee.
  • Uses the Iowa Model to achieve evidence-based nursing practice including integration of decisions/activities endorsed by the NPIC.
  • Applies specialty nursing standards in MGUH nursing practice policies/procedures.
  • Participates and/or leads local and system level practice-related committees or councils.
  • Participates in patient experience initiatives.
  • Provides oversight and/or works closely with local Wound, Ostomy, & Continence Nurses to prevent and treat pressure injuries.
  • Participates in local and/or system level performance improvement initiatives to meet MSH targets for hospital-acquired conditions and quality and safety metrics.
  • Remains abreast of innovative approaches to nursing practice through regular scanning/reading of nursing/leadership/clinical literature, through attendance at conferences, active participation in local or national professional organizations, or participation on professional organization listservs.

Programs:

  • Develops and provides oversight for MGUH Nursing Peer Review Committee.
  • Provides oversight of local action/adoption and sustained integration of Nurses Improving Care of Health System Elders (NICHE).
  • Provides oversight for creating local interest/awareness and promoting action/adoption and sustained integration of nurse champion programs.
  • Provides oversight, participates in and supports local associate safety programs.
  • Supports implementation and utilization of system level specialty practice programs, councils and committees.
  • Provides support for and/or leads local initiatives to achieve and/or maintain Magnet or Pathway to Excellence (PTE) Programs. Note: If the Director of Nursing Practice Innovation also serves as the MGUH Magnet Recognition coordinator or PTE coordinator, they will report to the MGUH CNO for all activities directly related to these designation programs.

Leadership:

  • Partners with local Nursing Professional Development Specialist and Informatics Leads and Directors to support new educational programs or ongoing classes, conferences, or skills fairs based on annual competencies or observed gaps in nursing practice.
  • Serves on local and/or system interdisciplinary committees.
  • Supervises direct reports, as applicable, to develop and meet professional performance goals and objectives as well as practice-related local and system nursing goals. Provides coaching and counseling as needed. Performs other duties as assigned.
