General Purpose

Description :

Under the supervision of the Programming & Outreach Librarian perform public service work and technical service work serving library users directly and indirectly.

The Library Assistant II - Programming and Outreach position is part-time (32 hours per week) and is eligible for pro-rated benefits such as paid vacation and holidays, sick leave, retirement, health insurance and life insurance.

Work schedule is variable and includes a weekly evening shift and one Saturday shift every four weeks. Schedule is subject to change.

Essential Job Functions and Responsibilities

Plan, schedule, and coordinate programs for all ages. Determine elements of and activities for programs. Evaluate the need for additional programs, and the continuation of existing programs.

Communicate with library users to determine programming preferences. Coordinate programming schedule with other Department staff.

Determine needed supplies and monitor programming supplies throughout the year.Plan and coordinate outreach visits to local organizations (e.

g. schools, daycares, senior center, Boys and Girls Club). Contact sites and schedule visits. Coordinate visits with Library staff schedules.

  • Identify program themes and determine activities.Provide direct assistance to library users at the service desk in person or by phone, including checking items out and in;
  • assistance meeting information needs; instruction using the library database and SCLS online resources; readers' advisory;

Coordinate delivery times with volunteers.Recruit, organize, supervise, and schedule department volunteers.Recommend materials for purchase in assigned collections.

Assist with displays, passive programs, and enrichment equipment areas.Promote programs and outreach activities via social media, newspaper, radio, and other promotional avenues.

Develop and maintain a network of contacts in the community to enhance programs and services.Perform opening and closing procedures.

Regularly communicate with Programming & Outreach Librarian to discuss plans, share information, and receive direction.Other duties and projects as assigned.EQUIPMENT USED

Includes book cart, building security system, calculator, camera, computer and peripherals such as printers and scanners, copy machine, media players, fax machine, microfilm reader-printers, paper cutter, paper shredder, popular consumer electronic devices, digital projector, telephone, smartphone.

Qualifications

Knowledge of library methods, policies, and procedures and the ability to apply them to library operations.Ability to work with children, teens, and adults;

individually and in groups.Knowledge of early literacy principles and application.Ability to design and create artistic projects and crafts.

Ability to communicate effectively with staff and public, and maintain good public relations.Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public, peers and supervisors.

Ability to work independently, organize and prioritize work, respond to varied / changing work demands and make decisions as appropriate.

Willingness to maintain skills in above-mentioned areas through active participation in appropriate continuing education activities.

Working knowledge of English grammar and spelling. Knowledge of Spanish helpful.Demonstration of good character as determined through a background investigation.

EDUCATION : 1. Required : High school diploma or equivalent and two years of study at an accredited college, university or technical school.

2. Preferred : Degree from a 4 year college or university3. Required : Two years library or related experience4. Required : Keyboarding, computer skills, and general office skills5.

Required : Current driver's license and use of personal vehicle6. Spanish language ability helpful but not required.
