MISSION STATEMENT

SUMMARY
The primary purpose of the Research Data Specialist is to provide administrative and clinical research support for the coordination of research studies. A major focus will be on database generation and use of big datasets such as Foundry. Impacts the clinical trial patients in designated protocol and the efficiency and effectiveness of research conducted in the Department of GI Medical Oncology. Provides oversight and training in clinical trial projects.
JOB SPECIFIC COMPETENCIES
Collaborates with research team and principal investigator in large-scale multi-protocol clinical trial projects.
Trains and/or orients research staff on the clinical research procedures/processes and compliance information. Develops and facilitates educational presentations.
Participates in the development of policies, procedures and workflow processes.
Coordinates meetings to review project status and generates reports to support investigator research oversight.
Participates in protocol start up meetings and close-out visits. Develops protocol-specific tools and communicates recommendations regarding protocol inconsistencies and requirements. Develops and maintains a processing and tracking systems for all protocol related paperwork. A basic knowledge of medical terminology is required. Develops patient care methodology for protocols, including criteria for protocol submission.
Assists with departmental research database development and quality assurance testing.
Functions as the lead in the development and maintenance of systems for controlling paper flow for research protocols. Performs protocol duties according to institutional policies and procedures. Screens patients prior to endoscopic procedures for possible participation in blood and tissue banking protocol. Coordinates blood sampling and tissue collection by interacting with the multi-disciplinary team, including the gastroenterologist, the endoscopic nursing staff and the Tissue Banking and Procurement Facility. Responsible for communicating and posting all cases for the gastroenterologist, endoscopy nursing staff and pathology staff. Take charge and process patients' bloods received from clinics including isolating plasma; serum; lymphocytes and store them properly.
Responsible for the completion of data forms, surgery and pathology information. Responsible for maintaining an accurate database for protocol(s) to include patient demographics, disease site, tissue histology, treatments and outcomes.
Maintain a log of the collection of blood and tissue samples, and a log of where blood and tissue samples are stored.
Assist PIs in writing abstracts, manuscripts, grants, and correspondence. Assists in the preparation of information and reports for grant and journal article submission. Orients faculty/ support personnel from face-to-face meetings, verbal discussions over the telephone and / or by retrieval and visual reading of published materials, manuals, manuscripts, medical charts and other reports.
Orders and collects charts and appropriately reviews them. Collects all relevant patient data and enters the data into electronic forms. Responsible for the entering and reviewing all data in the database.
May assist with establishing a system for coordination of protocol administration, which includes writing, processing, submission and maintenance of protocols. Gathers pertinent information by visually reviewing various files and paperwork on assigned subjects for use in the preparation of scientific / clinical / research reports, grants, protocol, speeches, abstracts, and manuscripts.
Assist in research activities in the laboratory. May assist translational laboratory research by maintaining and organizing the cell stock, antibody stock and provide cell lines to lab staff. Assist with lab orders including antibodies, supplies, animal and all materials that are necessary for the routine lab operation
Maintains and analyzes large datasets
Other duties as assigned
Education Required - Bachelor's degree in a related field.
Preferred education: Master's degree in a related field.
Experience Required - Two years research study experience. May substitute required education degree with additional years of equivalent experience. With preferred degree, no experience required.
Education Preferred: Degree in Medicine
Experience Preferred: Experience in oncology research
