McLean School, a K-12 co-educational independent school in Potomac, Maryland, seeks applicants for the full-time K-8 Coordinator of Learning for Math and Reading

to begin August 2024.

Changing the lives of students and families, McLean School is Washington, DC’s most comprehensive and academically rigorous full-scope college-preparatory program for bright, college-bound students, including those with dyslexia, anxiety, ADHD, and executive functioning challenges. For 70 years, the School has helped students realize their full potential with a curriculum that is traditional without being rigid, challenging without being intimidating, and designed with the real world in mind.

The K-8 Coordinator of Learning for Math and Reading will support K-8 Math and Reading programming and instruction. They will oversee the School’s K-8 Math and Reading Assessment Program, communicate with parents and teachers about areas of student strengths and challenges, and coach teachers to use effective instruction for all students in K-8 math and reading. 

Job Responsibilities

  • Ensure administration of required K-8 screeners and diagnostics;
  • Facilitate teams of teachers to use IXL and Acadience data to develop instructional plans responsive to student needs;
  • Communicate results of benchmark and progress monitoring assessments with parents; work with parents and teachers to design instruction that supports students in meeting or exceeding benchmarks;
  • Support teachers in the implementation of effective instructional strategies in math and reading K-8.;
  • Support teachers in the development of cognitively demanding tasks to engage students individually and collectively in K-8 math and reading;
  • Support teachers in the use of strategies that foster increased higher levels of thinking for K-8 in math and reading;
  • Coach teachers to create, administer, and respond with appropriate assessments that measure growth in math and reading for all K-8 students and respond to meet student needs; and 
  • Increase teachers' capacity and confidence to implement math and literacy instructional approaches 

Essential Functions

The K-8 Coordinator of Learning for Math and Reading supports teachers' efficacy in differentiated daily instruction to equitably increase academic growth and achievement for all learners in K-8. They will spend their time working collaboratively with classroom teachers on a weekly basis by:

  • Coaching
  • Co-Planning
  • Model Teaching
  • Co-Teaching
  • Parent Communication

This person will also support the teachers with strategies around:

  • Scaffolding
  • Accommodations
  • Tiered Activities
  • Formative Assessments to ensure diverse groups of learners and all ability ranges of students are addressed in the classroom.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of assessment strategies, resources, and appropriately differentiated materials, curriculum, and instruction emphasizing math and reading instruction in K-8.
  • Experience in and knowledge of equity principles and cultural competencies 
  • Knowledge of effective instruction to support the teacher's ability to analyze, communicate, model, and assess elements of the teaching process.
  • Knowledge of unique student populations such as students with anxiety, ADHD, executive functioning challenges, and dyslexia. 
  • Ability to collaborate with all adults in the building regarding instructional strategies for students.
  • Ability to establish and maintain trustful, confidential, and supportive relationships with teachers to help develop them as professionals.
  • Ability to foster collegiality and community among teachers through professional development.
  • Ability to encourage multiple perspectives and resolve conflicts in a professional manner.
  • Knowledge of adult learning needs and processes and how to use coaching cycles to maximize growth.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills; excellent oral and written communication skills.

Qualifications

  • Has taken or is willing to take numeracy professional development classes, 
  • Has taken or is willing to participate in literacy professional development, such as Orton Gillingham, Comprehension Blueprint, and The Writing Revolution
  • A minimum of 5 years of classroom experience, preferably, but not required, in 5.
