McLaren Health Care is Hiring an Unit Assistant - Interventional Radiology Near Lansing, MI

Position Summary: Responsible for taking on a variety of administrative tasks that support nursing unit operations and the delivery of effective and efficient services to meet the needs of patients and families. This includes establishing and maintaining efficient communication, accurate data entry, maintaining inventory of identified forms and supplies, and other support activities. Provides health care for patients under the direction of a nurse. Assists patients under their care with day-to-day tasks, playing a vital support role.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  1. Helps patients by responding to intercom requests; obtaining needed services from nurses, licensed practical nurses, physicians, aides, and other hospital personnel.
  2. Greets visitors in person or on the telephone and answers inquiries; relays calls to patients; gives directions; refers inquiries to nursing and physician staff.
  3. Performs varied administrative tasks such as answering the phone, greeting visitors, maintaining department logs & reports, scheduling appointments, typing, filing, copying, faxing and ordering office supplies and equipment supplies to ensure the functionality and coordination of the department's activities.
  4. Performs a variety of computer/data entry functions to support patient care including establishing and maintaining patient record; may enter nursing and physician notes and orders; handling the majority of a patient's paperwork, such as discharge, admission, and personal information forms.
  5. Ensures compliance with all health care regulations, including HIPAA and OSHA.
  6. Answers patient calls and determines how best to help them.
  7. Provides physical support for patients with daily activities and personal hygiene, including bathing, dressing, getting out of bed, using the toilet, walking, standing or exercising.
  8. Turns and repositions bedridden patients.
  9. Ensures patients receive appropriate diet by reviewing their dietary restrictions, food allergies, and preferences. Provides encouragement and support with eating.
  10. Obtains and uses a wide range of information from physicians, caregivers and nurses about patient condition, treatment plans, and suggested activities to provide appropriate patient care.
  11. Measures and records food and liquid intake and urinary and fecal output and reporting changes to medical or nursing staff.
  12. Records vital signs, including blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiration rate as requested by staff or as ordered.
  13. Examines patients to detect issues requiring medical care, including open wounds, bruises or blood in urine.
  14. Delivers compassionate support, attention, and assistance to patients and families.
  15. Maintains safe and clean working environment and protects patients and employees by adhering to infection-control, hazardous waste and other policies and protocols.
  16. Perform other related duties as required and directed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  1. Strong customer service skills and proficient computer literacy.
  2. Strong communication and organizational skills.
  3. Functional competence with basic medical terminology.
  4. Demonstrated ability to receive a wide variety and high volume of information and to disseminate information to the appropriate individuals with efficiency and accuracy.
  5. Competency in applying the principles, methods, materials and equipment necessary in
    providing service.
  6. Ability to work effectively with a variety of teams and personalities.
  7. Current knowledge of functional area theories, practices and techniques per discipline.
  8. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
  9. Knowledge and skill with common office software applications.
  10. Compliance with the Code of Ethics and Guide for Professional Conduct.
  11. A basic understanding of patient care, medical terminology, coding procedures, reference tools, and appropriate clinical pharmacology for nurse assistant practice scope.
  12. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, and customer service skills.
  13. Familiarity with electronic medical health care record systems.

  2. Provides for admission and discharge needs of pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients under the supervision of licensed nursing staff.

Qualifications:Required:
  • High schooldiploma or equivalent.
  • StateCertified Nursing Assistant or 6 months experience
  • One (1)year prior unit assistant or front medical office secretarial experience unlessgraduate of a relevant training program.
  • One(1) month of job-related experience and/or training.
  • BLScertification
Preferred:
  • Successful completion of a health unit coordinatorcourse.
  • Associate degree in related field.
