What you will do:

The HIM Assistant Manager oversees the daily operations of the Health Information Management (HIM) Department in coordination with the manager. Daily operations may include: the release of information, record analysis, providers incomplete area, scanning, and coding/abstracting.

Responsibilities:

  • Providers oversight, guidance, and workflow of all Health Information Management staff in the HIM area.
  • Accepts responsibility and accountability for operations of assigned functional areas in the Manager’s absence.
  • Finds and implements changes about policy, productivity, and quality measures, and assures that staff performance improvements related to work-flow efficiencies and operations.
  • In coordination with the Manager of Health Information Management recruits, interviews, and makes recommendations to fill personnel vacancies.
  • Coordinates staffing issues and procedural issues with Manager of Health Information Management.
  • In coordination with the Manager of Health Information, evaluates staff performance on an annual basis. Accurately measures and evaluates staff performance, productivity, and quality measures, and assures that staff is following and meeting departmental standards.
  • In coordination with the Manager of Health Information Management, trains, provides feedback, evaluates, and provides corrective action to staff as needed.
  • Decide and assign the principal and significant secondary ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes and CPT codes, using official coding guidelines.
  • Responds to inquiries of staff, vendors, and the public for the purpose of providing information and/or direction, discussing and resolving any issues and/or problems.
  • Ensures staff keep a positive customer service attitude.
  • Covers the schedule for call-ins daily.
  • Answers incoming telephone calls as needed.
  • Follows changes in duties and assignments in a positive and cooperative manner.
  • Adjusted to peaks in workload and shows flexibility and adaptability to change.
  • Completes assignments in proper periods.
  • Helps co-workers to ensure completion of all assigned duties, as necessary.
  • Performs duties in a self-directed manner with minimal supervision or direction.
  • Performs other duties as assigned or needed.
  • Demonstrates a positive, supportive, respectful, and helpful attitude in interactions with all department customers (patients, physicians, visitors, and other healthcare team members).
  • Offers and acts on constructive feedback. Maintains calm, professional manner.
  • Contributes to cohesive group relationships; uses open communication to find and resolve problems in and between departments. Refrain from gossiping.
  • Makes suggestions for improvements to procedures or innovations to enhance patient service. Participates in interdepartmental performance improvement teams as directed.
  • Demonstrates responsibility for own growth and development. Updates knowledge to keep departmental core competencies.

Qualifications


What you will need:

  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Graduate of or currently enrolled in a Medical Coding Program. In lieu of Medical Coding education, an active coding certification is needed.
  • Computer skills needed.
  • 2 years’ experience in an acute care facility or medical office setting and preferred experience related to Medical Coding and/or Health Information Management.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and pathophysiology, pharmacology, and ancillary test results.
  • One year experience in hospital or medical office based electronic medical record.
  • Must have proven ability to keep confidentiality.
