Maintenance Worker

Purpose Statement
Under general supervision from the Facilities manager, maintain the exterior of the school buildings, parking lots and turf ground areas. This work shall be completed in a neat, clean, orderly and safe manner following a predetermined schedule. Assist in the general maintenance of the school buildings and equipment and do other related work as required.

Essential Functions

  • Operate a variety of power grounds equipment, including large mowers, tractors, various grounds equipment, and sweepers.
  • Drive a truck with a trailer attachment in transportation, loading and unloading of maintenance service vehicle to and from school facilities.
  • Service grounds maintenance equipment and make minor adjustments and repairs, and perform a variety of preventative maintenance functions.
  • Mow large fields and sweep large areas of asphalt and concrete.
  • Snow plow sidewalks and parking lots, shovel sidewalks, apply deicing chemicals.
  • Preparing landscaped areas for the planting of lawns and a variety of plants, shrubs and trees.
  • Spray for weeds and insect control.
  • Move furniture and equipment and may perform other grounds maintenance functions.
  • Perform maintenance, repair and construction of furniture, fences, playground equipment.
  • Perform or assist with the maintenance and repair of plumbing, electrical, flooring, ceiling tile, door hardware, audiovisual equipment and fixtures.
  • Prepare surfaces and paint a variety of equipment, furniture, and facility physical structures.
  • Conduct safety inspections of the exterior of the school buildings, playground equipment and grounds.
  • Maintain log on the application of pesticides and herbicides.
  • Perform custodial functions as required.

Job Requirements Minimum Requirement

Skills
Basic computer skills is a must. Highly dependable. Strong attention to detail. Able to work in a fast paced environment. Self motivated and able to work independently. Work from a ladder or scissor lift if necessary to perform custodial cleaning or light maintenance. Methods, procedures, materials, and tools commonly utilized in grounds maintenance and gardening work. Common tools, materials, and equipment used in the general maintenance trades. Safe working methods and procedures.

Ability
Heavy physical work involving pushing and pulling of objects weighing up to 100 pounds, with frequent lifting of objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Physical dexterity in limbs and digits necessary to operate hand and power driven equipment and tools commonly used in the custodial trade, and perform strenuous manual labor; ability to bend, stoop, grasp, and reach. Ability to work around plants, shrubs, and groundcovers without allergic reaction. Work out-of doors during inclement weather conditions. Understand and carry out oral and written directions. Establish and maintain an effective working relationship with those contacted in the course of work. Relate effectively with racially and ethnically diverse staff, students, and community.

Knowledge
Skillfully operate, maintain diagnose, and repair grounds equipment and safely and skillfully use a variety of grounds maintenance and gardening tools; Perform heavy manual work functions pertaining to grounds maintenance, equipment operation, and gardening work. Basic methods, materials, tools and terminology used in grounds maintenance and gardening. May be required to mix and apply herbicides, pesticides and weed abatement chemicals. Must be able to demonstrate safe working methods and procedures. Read and work from drawings and blueprints. Prepare simple reports and records. Understand and carry out oral and written directions.

Responsibility
Responsibilities include: working independently under broad organizational guidelines to achieve unit objectives. Directing other persons within a department, large work unit, and/or across several small work units. Supervising the use of funds. Utilization of resources from other work units is often required to perform the job's functions.

Working Environment
Typical physical demands: Frequent lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling. Some climbing and balancing. Some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling. Requires fine finger and limb dexterity. Position fluxuates based off the season and the changing environment but generally the job requires 20% sitting, 40% walking, and 40% standing. The job is performed under some temperature extremes and under conditions with some exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.

Education
High school diploma. Target job related education that meets school district’s requirements.

Experience

  • One year of experience in the operation of large grounds equipment, tractors, trucks, and large power mowers used in performing grounds maintenance or gardening work.
  • One year of experience as an unskilled and semiskilled worker in one or more of the basic Maintenance(Carpentry/Plumbing/Electrical/HVAC) trades.

Certificates and Licenses

  • Possess an appropriate North Dakota driver's license. Have an acceptable driving record. Qualify for insurability by the District's insurance carrier.
  • Ability to obtain a North Dakota Commercial Applicator license with 12 months.

  • Criminal justice/fingerprint clearances
