Position Summary:
The Morgan lab at the MBL seeks a highly motivated individual to join The Eugene Bell Center for Regenerative Biology and Tissue Engineering as a Research Assistant II. The successful candidate will work on the neurobiology of Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative disorders, including the cellular and molecular impacts at synapses.
Additional Information:
Major responsibilities include: performing light and electron microscopy; general lab management; and leading a research project or assisting the PI and other lab personnel with experiments, depending on experience level. Other tasks include performing basic biochemistry; performing data analysis, animal care, purchasing, lab maintenance, and minor administrative tasks. Position will be for 2 years, but may be extended beyond this period contingent upon securing additional funding.
Basic Qualifications:
The ideal applicant will have a master’s degree in one of the following scientific areas: Neurobiology, Cell and Molecular Biology, Physics, Biochemistry, Biomedical Engineering, or another similar field. However, applicants with a B.S. or B.A. in one of these areas and at least 2 years of full-time research experience will also be considered for the position. Must have a strong background and demonstrated interest in neuroscience and/or cell biology, and strong analytical skills. Must know standard laboratory practices and be familiar with general laboratory equipment. Must have some experience with imaging of biological tissues. Must be able to work independently. This position requires the individual to work occasionally at night or on weekends in order to meet deadlines.
Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have at least 2-3 years of prior experience working full-time in a research laboratory and will have direct experience with tissue sectioning, electron microscopy, fluorescence imaging, image analysis, and basic biochemistry. Prior experience with electrophysiology would be a plus, as would prior experience working with fish or other aquatic species.
Physical Requirements:
Minimal exposure to biohazardous chemicals. Occasional lifting of heavy objects (<30 pounds).
