The Lower School Associate Teacher assists the three lead teachers in educating a diverse group of learners within an atmosphere of kindness, while upholding all aspects of the MJS mission and Holy Child goals.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Instruction
Works with the teachers to plan and implement a program of instruction suitable to the academic and social/emotional needs of the students
Works with small groups of students or individual students in order to differentiate instruction and meet the needs of all learners
Helps provide the teachers with important information about student progress by sharing information about observations of students with the lead teacher as well as the Student Support Team (SST).
May be asked to instruct or manage the whole class of students, according to teacher lesson plans or provided curriculum materials.
Assists the teacher in assessing students’ needs and progress by helping to administer the AIMS assessments 3 times a year with the learning specialists.
Will participate in any necessary professional development and training as needed for student success.
Curriculum
Helps the teacher prepare materials for lessons, including photocopying, laminating, cutting, organizing, collating, filing.
Keeps current in subject matter knowledge and new programs
Classroom Management & Organization
Helps the teacher with classroom displays of student work and organize materials
Works with the teachers to ensure that consistent behavior standards and/or behavior plans are applied
Communicates promptly with lead teachers when incidents occur
Professional Development
Attends workshops and training as directed
Participates in MJS Faculty Professional Growth Review process
SKILLS and COMPETENCIES
A sound knowledge of childhood development and pedagogy
Dynamic, engaging personality
Knowledge of and ability to support current technology (Macs and iPads) throughout the curriculum, Apple teacher certification desired
Collaborative and flexible team player
Sense of humor and love of this age group
Supportive, nurturing, warm personality
Experience in a faith-based or independent schools a plus
OTHER DUTIES
Understands that daily and weekly schedule may change depending on the direction of the teacher, maintains a flexible attitude
Respects the confidentiality of records and information regarding students and parents
Attends faculty meetings as required
Performs supervisory duties at lunch and recess, before and after school, as assigned
Helps supervise field trips
Maintains a positive, calm attitude
Maintains a cooperative attitude with all constituents of working together for the needs of the students
May be asked to help photograph students in action in the classroom and on field trips
May be asked to step in to work in other classrooms if necessary as a substitute when the need arises
Maintains excellent communication with the lead teacher and colleague
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE and JOB REQUIREMENTS
Associates degree in child development or related field required. Bachelor’s degree preferred
Minimum of 1 year prior experience working with school aged children required
Must pass a background fingerprint clearance
Must pass a health screening and TB test
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to use hands to handle or feel and reach with hands and arms. The employee is required to see in the normal visual range with or without correction, read printed materials and tell the difference among colors. The employee must be able to push or pull up to 25 pounds for some job duties may be needed. This role will require long periods of standing and walking. Frequent bending, reaching, squatting/kneeling, twisting.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job the employee works in an environment where the noise level is usually moderate and constant distractions due to constant foot traffic, and people talking. Employees are subject to indoor and outdoor working conditions with most work occurring indoors.
HAZARDS
Exposure to blood and other bodily fluids.
