Job Summary:

As the Controller of Maui Land & Pineapple Company, Inc., you will play a crucial role in overseeing the accounting function and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the company's financial records and reporting for a publicly traded company. You will also be responsible for reporting to the CFO, preparing accurate financial statements, and adhering to all applicable accounting standards and regulations, such as complying with GAAP standards, SEC filing, and internal controls. The ideal candidate will have a strong understanding of accounting principles, excellent partnering and leadership skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with various departments within the organization.

As Controller, your responsibilities will be:

1. Financial Reporting: Lead the preparation and filing of accurate and timely financial statements, including quarterly and annual reports (10-Q and 10-K filings), ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements (SEC, PCAOB, etc.).

2. Accounting Policies and Procedures: Develop, implement, and maintain accounting policies, procedures, and controls to safeguard assets, mitigate risks, and ensure adherence to accounting standards.

3. Internal Controls: Establish and monitor internal control frameworks to ensure the reliability of financial reporting and compliance with Sarbanes-Oxley Act (SOX) requirements.

4. Financial Analysis: Conduct in-depth financial analysis to support decision-making processes, evaluate financial performance, identify trends, and provide insights to senior management.

5. Audit Management: Coordinate and manage external audits (quarterly reviews and annual audit) by independent auditors, facilitating audit processes, addressing audit inquiries, and resolving any identified issues or discrepancies.

6. Regulatory Compliance: Stay abreast of evolving accounting standards, regulations, and disclosure requirements, interpreting their impact on the company's financial reporting and ensuring compliance.

7. Disclosure Practices: Oversee the preparation of financial disclosures, footnotes, and other required disclosures to provide transparent and comprehensive information to stakeholders.

8. Tax Compliance: Collaborate with the tax department to ensure accurate and timely tax reporting and compliance with tax regulations, including income tax provision calculations and related disclosures.

9. Team Leadership: Manage and develop a team of accounting professionals, providing guidance, training, and support to foster a high-performance culture and ensure the achievement of departmental objectives.

Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field. Certified Public Accountant (CPA) designation preferred.
  • Experience: Significant experience (typically 8 years) in accounting and financial reporting roles, preferably within publicly traded companies or public accounting firms.
  • Regulatory Knowledge: Thorough understanding of SEC reporting requirements, GAAP principles, and SOX compliance standards.
  • Analytical Skills: Strong analytical abilities with the capacity to interpret complex financial data, identify key insights, and communicate findings effectively.
  • Leadership Abilities: Proven leadership skills with the ability to lead and motivate a team, foster collaboration, and drive results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Communication Skills: Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex financial concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Attention to Detail: Meticulous attention to detail and accuracy in financial reporting, ensuring the integrity and reliability of financial information.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt to changing regulatory requirements, business needs, and organizational priorities while maintaining high standards of performance.
  • Discretion and a strong commitment to confidentiality.
