We are looking for a driven, collaborative and self-starting individual that will be responsible for maintaining and developing key processes, analytic tools and reports to support the planning and forecasting team. This position will maintain, design and automate key spreadsheets and tools that provide reliable analysis and reporting of our financial forecasts. They will work closely with other team members to help solution and maintain efficient and reliable analysis to deliver in-depth information to our senior leaders. These tools will aim to identify key trends, variances and attributions that explain and deepen the understanding of actual variances to our forecast results. Along with other team members, they also will support development and inclusion of forecast assumptions updates in our FinX forecast models.
The Strategic Planning & Forecasting Analyst is a highly creative role within the Strategic Planning and Forecasting team at MassMutual, and reports to the Head of Forecast and Attribution. This role will aid the team in performing detailed analysis around the results of our financial forecast and provide reliable support to other team members as we construct the "story" that explains the forecast, as well as the variance to actual financial results.
The ideal candidate will have some experience in preparing financial schedules and analysis or the appropriate education and internships to support the work required within a financial planning and analysis team. They will be a highly technical team member, with knowledge of various reporting tools, business intelligence technology and excellent Excel skills.
This individual should excel at working collaboratively and cross-functionally with team members and being able to pivot to other responsibilities as upcoming deliverables may dictate. Things move fast at MassMutual and the successful candidate must be able to 'roll with it,' and be hands-on. The team is currently located in Springfield MA, Boston MA and Cincinnati, OH.
Overall Responsibilities:
  • Routinely update key analytic packages that support actual versus plan and forecast analysis; including business unit scorecards, quarterly management reporting and business review packages
    • Update and refresh data for each forecast and plan cycle
    • Refine and automate analytics as requested to improve analytic capabilities and insights into earnings emergence
    • Own change control for data analytic packages to ensure reliable and accurate information at all times
  • In partnership with Strategic Finance Business Partners, oversee the quarterly Sales forecast process
    • Ensure the sales forecast is entered into FinX, complete and accurate according to forecast timelines
    • Validate that FINX results are flowing to our dashboards through a well controlled and governed process
    • Own and drive all sales reporting within the team and to external customers, including assisting the Weighted Sales and Fees analysis as needed
  • Own and drive policy count and AUM reporting
    • Validate the trends and output in FINX and recommend changes to assumptions as needed
    • Own, produce and maintain this view in the quarterly financial data package
    • Provide external reporting to the expense team and others across the organization
  • Collect, analyze and report forecasted insurance and reinvestment cashflows as compared to actual and prior forecasts
  • Work with other key team members in FP&A to deliver new FINX dashboards that will aid in variance analytics, key operating metrics and insurance roll-forwards. Understand and drive new unit metrics to provide further clarity into earnings emergence
  • Own the documentation of our key forecast processes and reporting, keeping the Confluence sites up to date and accessible and working with other forecast members to collect the documentation of their processes
  • Work with other team members in maintaining accurate forecast inputs and assumptions in FINX
    • Collect data and perform trend analysis to support assumptions with support from Forecast team members
    • Input approved assumption changes into FINX for current forecast and capture impacts of assumption changes
    • Maintaining appropriate documentation and audit trails
The Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in accounting, actuarial science, economics, finance or related discipline
  • 1 years of work experience in a fast-paced financial or insurance company
  • 1 years of excel experience
  • Able to travel between Boston, MA and Springfield, MA and Cincinnati, OH as needed.
The Ideal Qualifications:
  • Strong analytical skills; ability to analyze financial data sets and tell the story of the data
  • Highly technical in Excel or business intelligence technologies such Tableau or Power BI.
  • Experience with tools such as SQL or Alation.
  • Adept at seeking knowledge and understanding in the way MassMutual and our products operate.
  • Proven ability to complete high quality work efficiently and increase autonomy over time
  • Able to build and maintain strong working relationships, seek out knowledge and understanding, desire to "roll up one's sleeves" and understand the depths of the data.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to express ideas in an articulate, organized and persuasive manner to leadership and team member.
  • Able to work well under pressure and manage multiple deliverables
