Massachusetts Teacher Association is Hiring a Summer Member Organizer Near Holyoke, MA

The Massachusetts Teachers Association (MTA) is a union, dedicated to improving the workplace and the quality of life for all education employees and to protecting their hard-won rights. Equally important, we are an association of highly qualified professionals, committed to establishing and maintaining optimal conditions for student learning from preschool through graduate school.

The Field and Organizing Division is seeking qualified applicants for the position of Summer Member Organizer (SMO) and Lead Member Organizer (LMO) who will work from our regional offices throughout the state. One group of SMOs will have conversations with voters about passing a November ballot initiative to end MCAS as a graduation requirement. A second group will be trained to have conversations with non-members about the importance of joining their locals and the MTA.

The compensation for this position is $35.00 per hour/$875.00 per week for SMOs and $40.00 per hour $1,200 for LMOs.

There will be a limited number of Lead Member Organizers (LMO) selected from among the SMO applicants, who will help coordinate the program and work 30 hours per week.

The summer organizers who participate will build skills and knowledge to support their local union.


The duties for this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with the regional organizers to implement the field plan across Massachusetts, hitting all goals in all metrics including:
    • Canvassing (door knocking)
    • Phone banking
    • Member Enrollment
  • Meet daily or weekly reporting and data entry deadlines.
  • Participate in regular reporting conference calls or meetings.
  • Member organizers are expected to take the skills they acquire as part of the summer program and apply those experiences to organizing and member enrollment work in their local unions.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

To be successful in the role you will need:

  • Current MTA member who is not on the MTA Executive Committee or Board of Directors.
  • Prior organizing or Summer Member Organizer experience preferred.
  • Access to reliable mobile technology.
  • Proficiency and comfort using digital technologies.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills and ability to collaborate as a member of a team.
  • Self-motivated with attention to detail and responsible follow through.
  • Ability to identify and discuss member issues.
  • Personal transportation and valid driver’s license.

We prefer a six-week commitment, beginning July 15th and concluding August 25th.

There will be a daily stipend to cover mileage and data charges.
