Massachusetts General Hospital is Hiring a Research Technician Near Somerville, MA

General Summary/ Overview StatementThe Jain Laboratory at the Mucosal Immunology and Biology Research Centre (MIBRC) and MGH is focused on approaches that integrate advanced cellular, computational and molecular methods to understand the mechanisms of microbial influence on postnatal immune system development. This research is on the cutting edge of Immunology and will advance our understanding of Pediatric Immunity through the study of basic immunological developmental processes.
This is a full-time position that under the direction of the PI carries out a broad range of technical research and experimental activities and procedures.The work has a substantial in vivo component including the dosing and breeding of mice. Experience in mouse handling and tissue harvesting is highly desirable.
Principal Duties And Responsibilities
  • Prepares basic solutions and performs base-level procedures as assigned (i.e. pipetting, cell and tissue culture, etc.).
  • Performs routine experiments including flow cytometry
  • Assists with animal handling and maintenance as directed
  • Maintains laboratory notebook.
  • Conducts analysis of results, and may begin interpretation of results.
  • Sets up and prepares routine experiments as directed.
  • May perform independent literature searches.
  • Assists with organizing materials for publication or presentation.
  • Maintains and orders supplies.
A Research Technician II performs the duties of a Research Technician I (above) and may also:
  • Isolate and analyze blood and tissue samples from experimental mice
  • Creates mouse lines through breeding and genotyping/phenotyping
  • Executes protocols of non-routine experiments.
  • Calculates, transcribes and analyzes data.
  • Prepares and presents written and/or verbal reports.
  • Organizes and summarizes acquired data using scientific and statistical techniques.
  • Organizes and/or drafts material for the preparation of research papers and manuscripts for publication and/or presentation.
Skills/Abilities/Competencies Required
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member
  • Good communication skills
  • Computer literacy
  • Ability to perform multiple tasks independently
The Research Technician II Should Also Possess
  • Animal handling experience
  • Analytical skills and the ability to resolve technical problems
  • Ability to interpret acceptability of data results
  • Working knowledge of data management programs
  • Demonstrated competence in research techniques and methodologies
EducationBachelor’s degree required.
ExperienceNew graduates with some lab experience (via course work, internships, etc.) or those without any prior research experience will be considered for the Research Technician I position outlined above.
Those with a minimum of 1 year of directly related work experience will be considered for a Research Technician II position.
Supervisory ResponsibilityA Research Technician II may serve as a team leader to lab assistants and Research Technician I’s.
