Job Description:

The MassArt Art Museum (MAAM) is the college's teaching museum. The Student and Program Manager is a key staff member contributing to the positive student employment experience at MAAM and the seamless execution of MAAM's educational programs and initiatives. This position manages logistics, supervises part-time and student staff, and supports evaluation efforts in the following areas of activity: 1) Program & Events, 2) Student Employment and Professional Development, 3) Academic Engagement, and 4) Groups & Tours.

Salary: $58,000 - $64,000 annually, commensurate with experience
Position is governed by the APA collective bargaining agreement

Essential Job Duties

1. Oversees the student employee experience at MAAM for all positions, such as, but not limited to, the Museum Attendant position and MAAM Catalyst Fellows position. Works with the MAAM team and with contract employees to create a consistent and valuable student experience.

  • Oversees recruiting, hiring, onboarding, scheduling, and contracting of student employees
  • Serves as a central point of contact for MAAM student employees
  • Develops and facilitates student employee orientations and ongoing training initiatives
  • Maintains employment handbooks for all student positions and enforces related policies and procedures
  • Conducts regular check-ins and evaluations of student employment experience
  • Manages a part-time contract employee(s) who supports the administration of student employment initiatives at MAAM

2. In consultation with the Curator of Education conceives, develops, and implements select public-facing programs and events such as (but not limited to) hands-on Studio workshops, gallery talks and conversations, outdoor festivals, access programs, evening activations, performances, panel discussions, artists talks, and lectures.

  • Participates in the program planning process and conceives programs and events that align with the MAAM's strategic plan and audience aspirations and that embody the Museum's values
  • Manages, implements, and facilitates select programs and events, including (but not limited to) budgeting, invoicing, ordering and preparing supplies, managing event staff, etc
  • Identifies collaborators and community partners and cultivates mutually-beneficial professional relationships, both at the College and beyond, to support engagement efforts
  • Assesses program and event outcomes through evaluation and reports on programmatic successes, challenges, and opportunities

3. Assists with the coordination and facilitation of group visits, guided and self-guided, with internal (MassArt) and external audiences.

  • Plans guided, educational experiences that align with the learning goals and expectations of groups visiting the Museum
  • Facilitates guided experiences and tours in the Museum's galleries and Studio space using teaching techniques that emphasize close-looking, active participation, and learner-centered inquiry
  • Assists with the administration of group and tours including correspondence with group leaders, scheduling, data collection, and reporting

4. Works to create and sustain a positive, inclusive, and collaborative museum culture and visitor experience

  • Implements ongoing visitor experience training opportunities for student employees and museum staff
  • Maintains the Student Recharge Area to create a welcoming environment for student employees at MAAM

5. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Working Conditions

  • This position works Tuesdays to Saturdays
  • Flexible scheduling, with some evening, weekend, and holiday work
  • Office is an open workspace with seated desks
  • Collaborative team environment with frequent group meeting participation

Physical Effort

  • Occasional (10-33%): reaching, pushing, grasping and pulling. Lifting of up to 25 pounds
  • Frequent (34-66%): standing, walking; talking and presenting in front of large groups
  • Constant (67-100%): viewing of computer screen and reports, sitting, repetitive motion, talking and communication

Requirements:

Qualifications Required

Education: Bachelor's degree in museum education, museum studies, education, fine art, or the equivalent in knowledge and experience of these fields

Experience

  • 2 years professional experience in an arts and culture or educational setting
  • 1-2 years supervisory experience, supervising college students, interns, part-time employees, and/or volunteers
  • Experience developing and facilitating high-quality, theoretically-informed, educational programs and events for learners of diverse ages, abilities, interests, backgrounds, and lived experiences
  • Experience developing and facilitating guided experiences and tours within an informal, free-choice learning environment

  • Interpersonal awareness and communication skills: You possess the ability to interpret the feelings and concerns of others, respond effectively through superior written and verbal communication, and demonstrate compassion and empathy.
  • Teaching and presentation skills: You are a skilled and experienced educator who presents and facilitates with ease and confidence in front of large groups of varying ages and abilities, both in-person and virtually
  • Leadership skills: You possess the ability to lead by motivating others including student employees, fellowship students, and part-time workers
  • Multitasking skills: You possess the ability to multitask and manage multiple projects concurrently in a busy work environment informed by the ebbs and flows of the academic calendar
  • Teamwork skills: You possess the ability to both work independently, with guidance from a supervisor, as well as part of a dedicated and collaborative team

Additional Considerations

  • 1-2 years experience working in a museum environment
  • Familiarity with Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) and experience facilitating inquiry-based learning experiences in museum or gallery settings
  • Experience in a customer-service environment
  • Interest in and appreciation of contemporary art
  • Bilingual (Spanish preferred)
