About Devens Fire Department:

Operating from a single fire station, the Devens Fire Department covers a response area of 15 square miles, including federal, state and local properties. Devens is primarily a commercial heavy community with over 9 million square feet of commercial/industrial buildings and approximately 1500 residents. The Department has an ISO rating of Class 4/4X. and employs 25 full-time staff with an operating budget of approximately 3 million dollars. In 2023 the Department responded to approximately 1,000 emergency calls with 45% of them involving EMS.

Job Overview:

The Deputy Fire Chief is integral to the success of the Devens Fire Department. An active participant in all operations of the Devens Fire Department, the Deputy Chief contributes to the leadership of the Department, assuming command of the Department in the Chief’s absence. They play an active role in the supervision and training of firefighters, fire prevention and education, fire-fighting, and other emergency services.

In collaboration with the Fire Chief, the Deputy Chief acts as a liaison to other MassDevelopment departments, Devens residents, industry partners, branches of the US Army and Federal Bureau of Prisons located in Devens.

Responsibilities:

  • Assist the Fire Chief in the overall operations of the fire department.
  • Assume command of the department in the Fire Chief’s absence
  • Act as Safety Officer for the department. Certification within two years of employment is required.
  • Perform the duties of EMS Coordinator, including coordinating and scheduling training, maintaining EMS license for the service, and supporting members with re-certification.
  • Participate in firefighting activities and emergency medical services.
  • Manage the department budget, including issuing departmental purchase orders.
  • Investigate incidents and complaints lodged by department members and create a written report for the Fire Chief.
  • Support the Captain in conducting fire prevention programs, performing inspections, researching, and enforcing codes, along with drafting necessary reports.
  • Collaborate in the process of hiring and retention decisions.
  • Provide input regarding firefighter’s professional development opportunities.
  • Attend Agency and community meetings as required by the Chief.

Competencies:

  • Understanding of workplace concepts and issues related to diversity, equity, inclusion, access, belonging, and anti-oppression.
  • Minimum firefighter experience of at least ten years with a minimum of three years in a supervisory capacity.
  • High School graduate with pro board certification fire I/II
  • Firefighter instructor I professional board certification
  • Fire officer II professional board certification
  • Graduation from the Massachusetts firefighting Academy career recruit training program or equivalent from an accredited firefighting school.
  • Physical capacity to perform rescue operations, and handle/maintain fire apparatus and equipment.
  • Physically capable of handling up to 175 lbs., with the ability to stand, walk, run intermittently, and proficient in various positions such as sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling.
  • Familiarity with self-contained breathing apparatus, radiation monitoring devices, heat and radiation protective clothing.
  • Ability perform well in stressful situations, with physical danger and the potential risk of serious injury to oneself and others.
  • Demonstrated ability to make strong decisions and take prompt action in emergencies and hazardous situations.
