We have an opportunity for a top candidate to join Maryville College’s staff as the new Academic Success Coach.

The Title III Academic Success Coach will provide holistic academic advising to support students’ success throughout their college journey. The Academic Success Coach position is supported by a five-year Title III grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Education entitled "Building an IDEAL (Inclusive, Diverse, Equitable, Accessible Learning) Community at Maryville College." Project I.D.E.A.L aims to improve first-year student success and to improve instructional technology and data utilization by creating a student success model centered on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). Expected outcomes include improved academic performance, increased sense of belonging, and increased retention rates for low-income and Black students. The Academic Success Coach will focus on improving student outcomes by providing proactive outreach and personalized academic support to all students, particularly those at risk of attrition. The Academic Success Coach will support students with new student onboarding and orientation, course selection, degree completion plans, and identifying relevant student support resources customized to their needs.

The Title III award of $2.25 million is anticipated to be available from October 1, 2023, through Sept. 30, 2028. The Academic Success Coach reports to the Project I.D.E.A.L Director and works collaboratively with the Director of Academic Success Center. This is a 12-month full-time position subject to continued federal funding annually.

Your primary job duties and responsibilities would include:

  • Maintain accurate records to track student engagement and outcomes.
  • Collaborate with the Project I.D.E.A.L. Director and the Director of the Academic Success Center to provide workshops and trainings for students with supporting assessment, tracking and reporting.
  • Collaborate with the Project I.D.E.A.L. Director and the Senior Associate Athletics Director on group and individual coaching/mentoring session for student-athletes.
  • Provide one-to-one academic coaching and mentorship for students at high risk of attrition, including students on probation.
  • Assist with college success course instruction, the creation and implementation of academic support offerings, including tutoring, supplemental instruction, and group study.
  • Utilize student success assessment tools to make recommendations on advising and retention interventions
  • Provide students with general academic and career pathway information and partner with the Career Center and the advising Center to track student engagement.
  • In the summer months, collaborate closely with the Director of Advising to assist all new students in the registration process and in creating degree plans.
  • Empower students to set goals, employ new academic success strategies, and become independent, intentional learners.

Minimum qualifications for this job required are:

Education required to ensure success in this position:

  • Bachelor's degree required in education, advising, academic coaching, counseling, clinical psychology, social work, or a directly related liberal arts field from an accredited college or university.

Experience required to ensure success in this position:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience providing academic advising & coaching and related student services for undergraduates, particularly for first-year students.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience fostering student learning, support, and success for students at risk of attrition
  • Minimum of one (1) year experience working with first-generation, and/or minority students.

Special skills, knowledge, and abilities:

  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience managing student academic files in accordance with recognized protocols, policies, and regulations applicable for FERPA, Title IX, etc.
  • Knowledge of retention strategies and data-driven methods of identifying students who may be at risk of not continuing their education.
  • Demonstrated understanding and a solid commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Ability to work in partnership with staff, faculty, administrators, and student leaders.
  • Understanding of liberal arts curricula and a commitment to helping students connect their liberal arts educations to their chosen career paths.
