POSITION DUTIES
The Comptroller of Maryland Field Enforcement Bureau is recruiting for the position of Chemist III to work in the Motor Fuel Testing Lab located in Jessup, MD.
The Chemist III position performs physical and chemical testing of all regulated fuels in accordance with ASTM and US EPA standard methods to ensure compliance with regulations issued by the Comptroller of Maryland.
This position is responsible for interpreting and implementing new test methods in accordance with ASTM methods and performs routine and corrective maintenance of lab equipment in accordance with manufacturers’ guidelines.
Additional testing may be conducted on suspected illicit alcohol samples. This position may be called upon to testify in court, related to testing samples.
The incumbent will receive minimal supervision from the Chief Chemist and should have experience in quality assurance and quality control (QA / QC).
The work is performed in a laboratory setting. Employees are required to observe safety protocols to minimize exposure to toxic substances and fumes.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Education : A Bachelor’s degree in chemistry or other related science which includes completion of at least 24 credit hours in chemistry from an accredited college or university.
Experience : Two years of experience performing laboratory chemical analysis work in a public health or chemistry laboratory.
NOTES :
1. Possession of a Master’s degree in chemistry or a related science from an accredited college or university may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
2. Possession of a Doctorate degree in chemistry from an accredited college or university may be substituted for the required experience.
3. Candidates may substitute Armed Forces military service experience as a commissioned officer in chemistry classification or chemistry specialty codes in the chemistry field of work on a year-for-year basis for the required experience and education.
For education obtained outside of the , you will be required to provide proof of the equivalent American education as determined by a foreign credential evaluation service.
If you possess a degree obtained outside of the United States, please submit a detailed, course-by-course evaluation report from one of the equivalency evaluating members identified at .
DESIRED OR PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience with Gas Chromatography and ASTM methods is desired.

This background check is comprehensive and may involve fingerprinting. Upon initial appointment OR promotion to a position in the State Personnel Management System, an employee is required to serve an initial six- month probationary period.
This probationary period may be extended an additional six months under certain circumstances at the discretion of the appointing authority.
