MARY R. FISHER ELEMENTARY SCHOOL KINDERGARTEN SPECIAL EDUCATION TEACHERSalary: As per contractReports To: Classroom Teacher, Building Administrator and Director of Special EducationGeneral Duties: To assist the teacher in maintaining appropriate classroom activities in an environment that students can learn effectively. Responsibilities:•Modify work accordingly so students can access the curriculum. •Help maintain individual records for each student.•Guide students in developing positive relationships with peers and adults.•Assist with the supervision of students during student free time.•Maintain work and study areas.•Collect and display suitable material for educational displays.•Develop materials and group lessons.•Modify student work to remediate students’ weaknesses.•Attend meetings to help organize weekly program of instruction and discuss problematic students and situations if required.•Requires lifting during transfers and repositioning.•Assist with toileting, feeding and hygiene issues (if necessary).•Required to attend upcoming CPI training for de-escalation techniques.•Required to participate in aquatics program (be in the pool with students).•Knowledge of classroom strategies to help with de-escalation. •Able to assist the student when met with a challenge by physical needs when necessary, such as outbursts, running, etc.•Case management (contact families, setup meetings, meet all deadlines of IEP, evaluations, etc.., Medicaid billing).•Implement sensory diet techniques.•Differentiate instruction and materials based on each individual learner.•Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Special Education or his/her designee.Qualifications:•Meet Connecticut teaching requirements through CSDE for Special Education A B Bachelor’s Degree or beyond in any area, OR i.A Bachelor’s Degree or beyond in any area of Special Education, OR ii.Two years of study at an institution of higher education (60 college credits), OR iii.Meet the standard of performance set by the State of Connecticut.•Possess Elementary Special Education (Grades 1-6) certification.•Elementary/Middle School Special Education (Grades K-8) certification, preferred.•Demonstrated aptitude for working with a special needs’ population.•Must possess good communication skills and patience.•College level training in education/childcare, highly desirable.•Knowledge of FBA, BIP and Manifestations.•Knowledge of the Unique Learning Curriculum•Knowledge of MTSS/PBIS. •Building Social and Emotional certification through Bradley Hospital.•Knowledge of PEC’s (Picture Exchange Communication). •Knowledge of classroom strategies to help with de-escalation.•Documented experience and/or training with students who have Autism, medically fragile, multi-handicapped students, intellectual impairments, and behaviors that interfere with learning.•Knowledge of CDP, ORS & BHDDH.•Knowledge of Transition Services, Self-Determination & Self-Advocacy.•Completion of a successful interview.
