  • Position Summary
    • Under general direction, provides professional occupational therapy interventions in caring for neonatal through geriatric patients. Plans treatment programs based on individual patient needs identified by thorough evaluation. Instructs patient, families and caregivers in activities of daily living and home exercise techniques. Collaborates with interdisciplinary treatment team to facilitate transition back into the community. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.
  • Position Responsibilities
    • Unit Specific Position Responsibilities
      • Develops and provides in-service education to members of the patient care team and to the community.
      • Maintains adequate inventory of supplies necessary to carry out patient treatment objectives.
      • Assists in implementation of quality improvement programs.
      • Cleans and maintains equipment.
      • Performs thorough occupational therapy evaluations. Interprets and integrates evaluation findings. This evaluation may be administered independently or under referral from a physician.
      • Develops individualized treatment plans based on patient needs identified during initial evaluation or re-evaluations.
      • Provides patient, family/significant other, and patient care team education.
      • Collaborates with other health care team members in coordinating overall patient care program.
      • Monitors patient’s response to intervention and modifies treatment as indicated to attain goals.
      • Supervises and directs care provided by certified occupational therapy assistants.
      • Consistent with the Iowa Administrative Rules for Licensure of Occupational Therapists and Occupational Therapy Assistants [Chapter 206.8(5)] participates in treatment including direct face-to-face patient contact every twelfth visit or 60 calendar days, whichever comes first, for all patients regardless of setting and must document each visit.
      • Supervises patient treatment conducted by COTAs and Level I and II fieldwork students and supervises volunteers.
      • Develops appropriate home or community programming to maintain and enhance the performance of the patients in their own environment.
      • Documents results of patient’s evaluation, treatment, follow-up, and termination of services.
  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
    • Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):
      • Graduate of a occupational therapy program or graduate of a WFOT approved occupational therapy program.
      • Completion of a minimum of six months Level II Fieldwork experience.
      • Completion of NBCOT Certification Examination for Occupational Therapist, Registered or, possession of a Limited Permit to Practice Occupational Therapy issued by the Iowa Board of Physical & Occupational Therapy
      • Possession of license as an Occupational Therapist issued by the Iowa Board of Physical and Occupational Therapy or, possession of a Limited Permit to Practice Occupational Therapy issued by the Iowa Board of Physical & Occupational Therapy.
      • Mandatory Reporter training within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
    • Organizational Requirements:
      • Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.
    • Preferred Qualifications:
      • Masters Degree in Occupational Therapy
      • AOTA Board /Specialty Certification
      • Possession of license as an Occupational Therapist issued by the Iowa Board of Physical & Occupational Therapy.
    • Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
      • Knowledge of occupational therapy theory, anatomy, kinesiology, physiology, exercise physiology, human development, learning and human behavior.
      • Knowledge of occupational therapy equipment, counseling techniques, and medical record and report preparation and maintenance.
      • Skill in providing professional occupational therapy services and treatments including the use of good communication techniques, teaching precepts and complex problem-solving.
      • Ability to perform professional occupational therapy techniques, treatments; to operate occupational therapy equipment.
      • Ability to counsel patient and family members, fabricate appliances and splints, collaborate with health care and social service personnel, recognize and record patient progress, prepare and maintain medical records and reports, orient and instruct patient and health care personnel.
      • Ability to demonstrate clinical competence and maintain current knowledge in caring for neonatal through geriatric patients.
    • Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
      • Dependent upon specific position needs (i.e. Hand Therapy, Pediatrics, Low Vision, etc.)
