Middle School Counselor - Bothwell Middle School
Monday thru Friday: Approx. 8:00am-2:50pm
Approximate Start Date: August 2024
REPORTS TO: Principal, Assistant Principal
QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Valid Michigan teaching certificate with a School Counseling Endorsement (NT), or a School Counseling License (SCL), or a Preliminary Employment Authorization (PESC) from the Michigan Department of Education.
2. Background and experience with middle school students; continuing education in and experience with middle school developmental needs; trained in child and adolescent development, learning strategies, self management and social skills.
3. Strong interpersonal skills and ability to communicate well with parents, students, teachers, administrators, and community agency personnel.
4. Strong organizational skills.
5. Knowledge and experience in student assistance programming and comprehensive school counseling programming based on the school’s academic, attendance and discipline data addressing students’ academic, career, and social/emotional development.
6. Strong meeting facilitation skills designed to support student progress.
7. Effective student advocate.
8. Upholds and models ethical and professional standards.
9. Demonstrates team-oriented approach at all levels (department, building, District).
Knowledge of and experience with PBIS, MTSS, SOS or other suicide prevention programming, Section 504, EL services/testing/support, Skyward, EduClimber, and/or Trails for Wellness helpful but not required.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
a. Prepare and present school counseling classroom lessons based on student success standards and current school data.
b. Participate in data analysis to identify student issues, needs, and challenges.
c. Participate in, coordinate, or conduct activities which contribute to the effective operation of the school.
d. Act as a systems change agent to improve equity and access, achievement, and opportunities for all students.
a. Provide short-term counseling to students.
b. Provide individual student academic planning and goal setting.
c. Provide referrals for long-term support as appropriate.
d. Guide and counsel groups of and individual students in the areas of educational and career planning and social/emotional learning.
e. Provide small group counseling/programming as appropriate.
a. Provide advocacy for students at individual education plan meetings and other student-focused meetings.
b. Consult with teachers, staff, and parents regarding meeting the developmental needs of students.
c. Participate as an active member of grade-level academic teams.
