SCHEDULE: FLEXIBLE, PART-TIME, APPROXIMATELY 3 DAYS PER WEEK (POTENTIAL FOR FULL-TIME)

SUBJECT AREA/GRADE LEVELS: ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS, K-12

POSITION SUMMARY

The ESL Coordinator is responsible for ensuring a high-quality and compliant instructional program for all MACS English Language Learners.

MACS has a culture of respect and kindness. The ESL Coordinator is expected to exhibit respect and kindness for all staff, students and families while maintaining school expectations both behaviorally and academically. The ESL Coordinator works collaboratively with administration and staff for the benefit of all MACS students. Regular and predictable attendance are essential functions of this position.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Maintain student files to ensure all required documentation and information is current and complete
  • Collect Home Language Surveys and conduct parent interviews
  • Administer the WIDA ACCESS test yearly
  • Track reclassified ESL students and monitor their progress for two years after exiting the program
  • Maintain an accurate and current roster with all current students and their EL status
  • Mentor incoming staff for ESL program
  • Order testing materials for the WIDA ACCESS test
  • Return WIDA ACCESS test booklets in a timely manner according to the PA State deadline and requirements
  • Keep informed and updated on all ESL compliance regulations and requirements; research and implement new requirements and procedures as necessary
  • Update ESL student status information in Powerschool system to ensure accurate reporting (particularly to meet the October snapshot report requirement)
  • Communicate with classroom teachers and specialists, as needed
  • Communicate with parents and send home placement notifications
  • Observe ESL Teachers in the classroom to ensure high quality instruction is being provided
  • Screen incoming Kindergarten students and transfer students
  • Attend professional development activities, as needed/requested
  • Ensure regular and predictable attendance on scheduled work days
  • Other duties as assigned

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

  • Current PA Program Specialist English as a Second Language (ESL) PK-12 Certification is preferred
  • Additional PA teaching certifications preferred
  • Experience with ESL program monitoring and compliance
  • Knowledge of ESL programming state and federal requirements
  • Commitment to urban education and a belief that all students should be held to high academic standards
  • Experience in using data to drive instruction and inform decision making
  • Strong work ethic, positive attitude, teamwork and leadership skills
  • High physical and emotional energy
  • Strong technology skills
  • Excellent time management and multi-tasking skills with the ability to “wear many hats”
  • Excellent communication skills

WORKING CONDITIONS

The working conditions of an ESL Coordinator include:

  • Very high levels of social interaction, with daily and consistent work with children, parents, and other teachers.
  • Communicating with people face-to-face on a daily basis, as well as communication through phone, e-mail, letters, and memos.
  • Working very near others, within a few feet or less, which may result in exposure to diseases and infections, such as colds and influenza.
  • Exposure to loud sounds and high noise levels on a regular basis.
  • Responsibility for the health and safety of the children in their school.
  • Being placed in conflict situations where parents and students might become angry or unpleasant.
  • Working as part of a team of educators.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

The ESL Coordinator is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
