Marion County Sheriff Office is Hiring a Detention/Correction Deputy Trainee Near Florida, FL

BRIEF DESCRIPTION: The employee participates and engages in a full formal, full-time Detention Deputy Academy and in-house training and assigned work activities specifically designed and chosen to train and indoctrinate the individual in the field of corrections/detention. Work is performed under the immediate, daily, supervision and guidance of a higher-level deputy and/or academy instructor. The position reports to the MCSO Training Division Commander.DUTIES:
  • Abide by the "Law Enforcement Code of Ethics".
  • Abide by the MCSO Code of Conduct and all Operations Directives and all local, state and federal laws.
  • Maintain a passing grade with coursework, student deliverables and physical fitness requirements during the Corrections Officer Academy.
  • Maintain an alert and business-like and professional manner, and a military bearing in the classroom, during field training and when in the community at all times.
  • Perform any additional duties that may be required by the Sheriff or through necessity of situations.
JOB PREREQUISITES:
High school diploma or GED. 
Must be a minimum of 19 years of age by the time of graduation from the Detention Deputy Academy. 
The MCSO is committed to honoring Veteran’s preference appointments. 
Ability to be cleared to register as a student at The College of Central Florida. This clearance is from all financial obligations (debts) with any regionally accredited U.S. college, university of school of higher learning (beyond high school) as determined by The College of Central Florida. 
Successfully complete the MCSO competitive selection process for the position including medical, physical, drug screening and psychological assessments. 
Ability to maintain the physical condition needed to perform the essential functions of a full-time Detention Deputy Academy recruit. 
Possession of a valid Florida Driver License, with a good driving record. 
Be able to effectively communicate information in the English language both orally and in writing. 
Ability to interact and communicate effectively with academy instructors, faculty, and fellow students. 
Ability to demonstrate excellent teamwork skills. 
Ability to analyze situations quickly and objectively and determine a proper course of action. 
Ability to react quickly and calmly under emergency situations. 
Ability to develop skill in use and care of firearms. 
Ability to develop excellent report writing skills.
Ability to follow instructions and organize own work. 
Ability to work harmoniously with Agency personnel and outside contacts. 
Ability to handle highly sensitive information without compromising confidentiality. 
Possess normal sight and hearing and physical agility required for standing, walking and climbing stairs.
Ability to work with minimum supervision. 
Ability to maintain good physical and mental conditions and a positive professional demeanor.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
 
  • Maintain a valid Florida driver's license.
  • Successfully perform duties as a full-time student in a Basic Corrections Officer School in the State of Florida.
  • Maintain an alert and business-like and professional manner, dress and a military bearing in the classroom, during field training and when in the community at all times.
  • Maintain a satisfactory performance demonstrated by a passing grade average for the academy, on student deliverables and by meeting physical fitness requirements during the Corrections Officer Academy.
  • Within 10 days of successful graduation from the Corrections Officer Academy, take and pass the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) Criminal Justice Standards and Training Commission (CJSTC) examination for Certified Corrections Officers.
  • Required to make a 3-year employment commitment to Marion County Sheriff's Office at the time of selection as a Detention Deputy Trainee. This commitment period will begin on the date the Detention Deputy Trainee/Detention Deputy I is successfully released following the MCSO Detention Deputy Field Training Program.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • Various indoor and outdoor environments. Subject to exposure to severe weather conditions.
  • Although principally a daytime schedule of work, some nights, weekend or shift work can be required, including holidays and weekends.
  • Hazards include all dangers associated with law enforcement training, including possible severe physical injury or death. Both physical and mental stress is present.
 
ADA Compliance:
 Physical Ability: This non-sworn, civilian recruit training position requires performance of extremely physically demanding work occasionally that typically involves some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running, scaling and climbing. May involve lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling. Must be able to exert up to 150 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently to constantly lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects such as those required in training to develop the essential skills which are needed in the event of chasing and subduing an inmate resisting physical control in close quarters. Must be able to qualify with agency firearms requiring two hands and arms with associated fine dexterity movements. Tasks may also involve standing, sitting or walking for long periods of time. The job requires the ability to climb stairs on a frequent recurring basis in a routine and/or emergency environment. Defensive tactics skills development and firearms qualification training are also essential physical functions required of this position.
Environmental Conditions: The job requires inside and outside work; ability to tolerate inclement weather including heat, humidity, cold, fog, and other tropical weather conditions. Possible exposure to hazardous materials and conditions, toxic conditions, fumes, odors, vibration, dust, confined areas, animal/human waste and/or bodily fluids, noise, solvents, heights, machinery, slippery and uneven surfaces and traffic hazards which can occur during field training.
Sensory Requirements: In accordance with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement minimum vision must be at least 20/70 either/or both, corrected to 20/30 and hearing must be normal at a distance of fifteen feet.
