Marinette School District is Hiring a Steel Fitter in Training Near Sturgeon, WI

Position Title: Steel Fitter in Training

Location of Position: United States -- Wisconsin -- Sturgeon Bay

Business Group: Fincantieri Bay Shipbuilding

Department: Steel Fitting

Position Type: Full-Time; Permanent; Non-Exempt

Reports To: Hull Superintendent

Position Summary: Steel Fitter Trainees will learn a variety of skills as well as on-the-job experience during our 5 week training program. Trainees are taught by qualified teachers and skilled work site mentors to prepare them for a promising career. Upon successful completion of the course, steel fitter trainees will be responsible for steel fitting equipment, parts, interiors and exteriors of ships, and shipyard buildings at our vast, 63-acre facility.

Detailed Description:

Training may cover the following over the course of our 5 week training program:

  • Introduction to FBS tools and their proper application within the shipyard.
    • Review of frequently used tools: stick ruler, soap stone, striker, and adjustable wrench.
  • Thorough explanation on proper PPE to be worn while working as a shipyard Steel Fitter.
  • Introduction to burning, grinding, and tacking.
  • Proper setting of oxygen pressure for #2 and #8 torch tips.
  • Demonstration of their intended uses followed by hands on training.
  • Proper setting of welding machines for tacking with 1/8'' and 3/32" diameter electrodes in all positions.
  • Proper edge prep for butt and tee joints.
  • Review of proper use and required PPE for each type of grinder.
  • Terminology and demonstration of equipment and tools used by a fitter.
  • Application of fairing aids.
  • Thorough tour of the shipyard to include areas relevant to a Steel Fitter.
    • Vessel tours
    • Including areas that a Steel Fitter will be working and areas on a vessel that they should be aware of while preforming hot work. Examples would be engine rooms, fuel bunkers and belts, etc.
  • Proper way to weld pad eyes for chain jacks, chain falls, and stops for prota-powers.
  • Make and install a 12''x12'' crop in the vertical position with proper radiuses and bevels.
Trainees will:
  • Successfully pass the basic Steel Fitter Skills Test
  • Provide an overall review and demonstration of workmanship skills learned.
  • Adhere to attendance policies as attendance is an essential function of the job and the training program.
  • Have an ability and willingness to engage in highly energetic pursuits on the waterfront.
  • Maintain a commitment to and promote the Quality and Environmental, Health & Safety Policies.
  • Abide by all organizational policies and procedures.
