We Require
Bachelor's degree in Health Promotion, Public Health, Medical Technology, Health Sciences, or a health-related field
An equivalent combination of post-secondary education and/or job-related experience may substitute for the required education on a year-for-year basis
We Also Value
Experience working with the public conducting health-related field investigations for communicable diseases
Experience working as a Communicable Disease Investigator for a local public health department or state health services agency
Experience working in a medical field drawing blood, doing case investigative work, or interviewing or counseling clients
Experience working with various socioeconomic groups performing counseling or health education services
Experience working with STDs or epidemiological data related to STDs
Bilingual skills in English and Spanish
Job Contributions
Conduct interviews for patients that present for STD testing for symptoms, risks, and testing and treatment history
Based on the information provided in the interview, direct the patient to see a medical provider or to be tested through the express testing process
Perform venipuncture and obtaining specimens, including processing blood specimens, spinning vacutainers,and preparing urine samples for testing
Conduct field and telephone investigations with utmost regard to confidentiality by researching, identifying, locating, and contacting individuals with a confirmed, or potential case of an infectious disease
Refer clients to a medical provider for sexually transmitted disease (STD) diagnosis and treatment
Interview clients who have tested positive for an STD to elicit names and contact information of sexual partners and obtain epidemiological data, such as risk factors and previous disease status
Connect clients to appropriate agencies for follow-up care and education
Locate, notify, and interview the sexual partners of clients who have tested positive for an STD
Follow-up with confirmed STD-positive cases to ensure the individual is receiving medical care
Create and maintain case investigation documents, records, and report
Conduct community outreach activities targeting high-risk communities, including registering clients for testing, performing venipuncture, and obtaining specimens
Working Conditions
Work is performed in a fast-paced, clinical setting and requires interaction with a diverse population of clients and peers
Must be able to participate in emergency response training as scheduled and be available to respond as directed in the event of a public health emergency
Valid Arizona driver's license is required upon hire
Within one month of hire, all employees are required to provide evidence of immunity or receive immunizations for vaccine-preventable illnesses for any position within the Maricopa County Department of Public Health; required immunizations include MMR (measles, mumps, rubella), Tdap (whooping cough and diphtheria), Varicella (chickenpox), and annual Influenza; some positions require a Hepatitis B vaccine and/or a Tuberculosis test
Within six months of hire, the employee must complete the CDC STD modular training program and pass the one-week Passport to Partner Services course sponsored by the CDC
