Job Summary

Maricopa County Community College (MCCCD) is seeking a talented, energetic, and solution-focused Assistant Communications Director to join our External Affairs team!
Essential Functions

25% - Works directly with Maricopa County Community College District Director and provides backup for media inquiries and requests. This involves reducing risk to MCCCD through accurate and timely press releases, statements, and other materials for distribution to media outlets. Establishing and nurturing relationships with journalists, reporters, and media organizations is critical for maintaining effective media relations.
20% - Strategically leads the development and execution of communication plans supporting the daily operations of the District. Responsibilities encompass providing communication guidance to executive leaders, crafting internal and external communications, support social media activities and accounts for the District, and offering communication leadership aligned with the organization's mission, vision, and values.
15% - Oversees crisis communication efforts, collaborating with essential personnel to promote public health and safety, and minimize damage to district property, assets, resources, and reputation during crisis situations to mitigate risk to MCCCD. May act as a spokesperson when necessary.
15% - Oversees the creation, management, and distributed content for various platforms, including blog posts, newsletters, news releases, and feature articles. Attention to details and quality is essential in ensuring accuracy and consistency with messaging, voice, tone, style, and brand guidelines.
10% - Manage public relations and communication staff and systems that facilitate enterprise-wide community engagement and social media strategies. Additionally, contribute content for external stakeholders and develop, write, and edit communications materials.
10% - Provide direction and work collaboratively with colleagues across colleges and marketing teams, faculty, staff, administration, and executive leadership to gather information and develop effective communication campaigns. Cultivate relationships with media outlets to promote the Maricopa County Community Colleges brand and address media inquiries and interview requests.
5% - Provide strategic input regarding budget planning and monitoring expenses related to social media and communication initiatives. This involves collaborating with External Affairs on budget development, tracking expenses, and ensuring cost-effective methods are utilized.
Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's Degree from a regionally accredited institution in public relations, marketing, journalism multimedia/graphic design, management or related field and five (5) years of experience in oversight and administration of public relations and marketing functions, campaigns, and programs that includes implementing plans, strategies and objectives and two (2) years of supervisory experience.
OR
Associate's Degree from a regionally accredited institution and seven (7) years of experience in oversight and administration of public relations and marketing functions, campaigns, and programs that includes implementing plans, strategies and objectives and two (2) years of supervisory experience.
High School Diploma or GED and nine (9) years of experience in oversight and administration of public relations and marketing functions, campaigns, and programs that includes implementing plans, strategies and objectives and two (2) years of supervisory experience.
Desired Qualifications

A. Five (5) or more years of communications experience in higher education, public, or private industry. Experience should demonstrate the successful handling of communication for a multi-faceted organization.
B. Five (5) or more years of experience in creating, revising, and implementing public-facing communications materials that deliver consistent messages to target audiences, to include but not limited to, news releases, fact sheets, white papers, social media and website content.
C. Five (5) or more years of experience working with multi-level organizational leadership, in cross-functional teams, working both in a team and independently as needed.
D. Five (5) or more years of experience in analytics and measurements to understand the impact of messaging. Knowledge of tools that assist in producing, organizing and distributing content effectively.
E. Outstanding writing skills, and experience developing and editing high-quality written materials, including educational materials, info sheets, posters and reports.
F. Master's Degree in related field

ADA AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS
  • May require prolonged periods of standing, sitting and viewing a computer screen.
  • May be required to lift or carry up to #25 lbs.
Working Conditions:
  • Work is routinely performed in an indoor, office environment but may be required to be out in the elements as needed.
  • May require evenings or weekends.
