TITLE: Physical Therapist Assistant
CLASSIFICATION: Support Staff
REPORTS TO: Assistant Superintendent of Special Education
EMPLOYMENT TERMS: Part-time, potential for full-time for the right, interested candidate
QUALIFICATIONS: Degree in physical therapy from an accredited physical therapist assistant program and be licensed as a physical therapy assistant in Michigan.
Experience in school therapy (preferred). An understanding of the learning processes of severely cognitively and multiply impaired students.
POSITION SUMMARY: It is the responsibility of this position to work with the Physical Therapist to carry out individualized therapy programs for each assigned student. This includes the implementation of appropriate direct therapy, appropriate record keeping, and working directly with classroom staff to enable all students to access their school environment.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
1. Under the guidance of the physical therapist, provide direct therapy to students with severe impairments, ages 3-26 years old, by following the plans provided to them.
2. To assist the physical therapist in the development and revision of individualized therapy programs.
3. To assist and train classroom staff in gross motor procedures as well as in lifting, handling and positioning students and in the proper use of positioning equipment.
4. To attend classroom team meetings and PLC meetings to consult with classroom staff.
5. To assist the physical therapist in developing and maintaining reports on students.
6. To accept responsibility for the student’s personal care, well-being, and environment throughout treatment.
7. To provide instruction within designated community settings in order that students may meet individualized educational goals and objectives.
8. Assists PT in creating mobility and positioning programs for each student. Train staff on how to implement and monitor the program.
9. Assists therapist in annually obtaining a prescription for each student receiving PT services. Prescription must be signed by an MD or DO per Medicaid billing requirement.
10. To maintain documentation for all sessions including attendance records, data, and Medicaid billing.
11. Maintain, monitor, and adjust inventory of mobility equipment throughout the school setting.
12. Attend IEP/MET meetings with appropriate paperwork/documentation provided by the PT.
13. Other duties as assigned.
EVALUATION: Performance will be evaluated by the supervisor.
Fulltime is considered a school year, 182 day, 6.75 hours per day. At fulltime this position offers excellent single subscriber benefits, or a monthly cash payment to out of health insurance at $500 per month.
Summer work may be available on a part time basis.
