Hours: 12 Hour or 24 on / 48 off

Pay grade: P4

Supervises day-to-day activities of assigned Emergency Medical Services (EMS) field personnel and to ensure Section goals are met and high-quality customer service is maintained. Administers patient care consistent with department protocols and physician orders. Ensures compliance with government regulations, medical protocols, and internal policies.

Note: FRS Retirement Special Risk. Safety Sensitive position requiring random drug testing.

Working Conditions

Indoor/Outdoor situation; high noise environment while performing certain responsibilities. Lifting and moving equipment and patients up to 100 lbs. alone; up to 250 lbs. with assistance, without causing harm or aggravating injuries to the patient or themselves. Work requires time outdoors for extended periods in a variety of weather conditions as well as working in a dynamic, high-stress environment.

This is a safety-sensitive position. Employment and continued employment with Manatee County Government is contingent upon passing pre-employment and random substance screenings. An applicant/employee who fails to pass a drug/alcohol screening, shall be disqualified from employment in any class for a period of three (3) years. 

Essential Functions
These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position. 

Supervises day-to-day activities of assigned Emergency Medical Services (EMS) field staff to ensure Division goals are met and high-quality customer service is maintained. Assigns work and delegates responsibilities to staff and monitors progress. Assists with other personnel activities of staff such as hiring, training, performance appraisals, scheduling, disciplinary matters, rewarding, and motivating. Cultivates strong working relationships and builds trust among team members. 

Performs technical work in the provision of basic emergency care and transportation. Under the direction of a physician, by written protocol or direct communication, provides advanced emergency medical care (Advanced Life Support) for the acutely sick and injured as defined in Florida Statute 401 and Florida Administrative Code 64J-1. 

Assists and directs EMS crew members and First Responders under normal and adverse conditions. 

Researches and prepares monthly evaluations and testing modules. Administers and scores tests. Assists in developing ongoing in-service programs. Assists with remedial training for employees with unsatisfactory performance. Provides training and guidance to department employees on best practices in service. 

Reviews patient care reports for compliance with protocols, completeness, and accuracy. 

Inspects work areas and quick response vehicles for cleanliness, proper maintenance and possible safety violations. 

Investigates and prepares reports for work-related accidents, such as vehicle accidents, employee injuries, and injuries to patients. Investigates and prepares reports for complaints received from physicians, patients, and the general public. 

Conducts and maintains job safety analysis and coordinates the division's regulatory compliance such as OSHA and Florida Administrative Code. 

Develops and maintains relationships with local fire districts and other first responders. 

Represents the EMS Division, Public Safety Department, and/or Manatee County Government at community and industry meetings and events. 

Assists in the development and implementation of department policies and programs. 

Performs other related work (including weather or other extreme emergency duties) as required.

Associates degree in Paramedicine, Emergency Medical Technology, or a related field.

Three (3) or more years of experience as a Charge Paramedic with advanced life support 9-1-1 System.

A comparable combination of education, training, and work experience which provides the requisite knowledge, skills, and abilities for this position, may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.

Florida State Paramedic, Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Pediatric Emergencies for Pre-Hospital Providers (PEPP) and/or Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS).

Valid drivers license required with valid Florida driver license required within 30 days of hire. Satisfactory driving record must be maintained.

Must pass department-approved agility test.
