    JOB SUMMARY: The middle school assistant principal assists the school principal in the leadership, coordination, supervision and management of the total school program and its operations. This position is supervised by the building principal.
    Knowledge and Abilities:
    • A comprehensive knowledge of the current issues, principles, and practices in public middle school education and the ability to apply them to the needs of a school.
    • Knowledge and effective skills in curriculum development, instructional practices, interpretation of test data, and budget development.
    • The ability to assist with administering and managing the operation of a middle school.
    • The ability to plan and supervise the work of others.
    • The ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, staff, school officials and the public.
    • Skill in oral and written communications and the ability to motivate others to reach their fullest potential.
    • The ability to serve as a role model.
    REQUISITE EDUCATION AND SKILLS:
    • Must hold a Postgraduate Professional license with an endorsement in Administration and Supervision PreK-12 with the Virginia Department of Education
    • Minimum of three years of successful teaching experience with some experience at the middle school level
    • Must possess organizational skills required to plan, implement and evaluate the school program and assist the principal in leading the teaching and support staff to achieve the school division’s goals
    • Must possess excellent communications skills to interact with community members, parents, students, teachers and other administrators
    ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: (including but not limited to the following)
    • Complies with all school laws, State Board of Education regulations, and all policies and regulations made by the School Board and Superintendent.
    • Performs all duties deemed necessary by the School Board and Superintendent for the efficient and successful operation of the school system.
    • Serve as primary administrator in the absence of the principal.
    • Assist the principal in developing and maintaining an effective educational program consistent with State and Federal guidelines and the philosophy, policies and goals of the School Board;
    • Assists the principal in meeting and conferring with students, parents, faculty and staff;
    • Assist the principal in the overall administration of the school; interpret and enforce school and school division policies and regulations.
    • Assist the principal in the transformation of the school culture into a results-oriented, collaborative learning community.
    • Assist the principal with supervising and monitoring student attendance, counseling, child studies, assessment, and other pupil services.
    • Assist in developing, administering and evaluating the middle school curriculum and instructional programs.
    • Assist the principal in monitoring compliance with federal, state, and local mandates and guidelines related to local and state testing programs and the local special education programs.
    • Maintain effective lines of communication and cooperative relations with parents and guardians.
    • Assist teachers in evaluating methods and materials and developing effective learning plans and classroom management techniques.
    • Assist in coordinating transportation, custodial, cafeteria, and other school support services.
    • Assist in school safety inspections, safety drill practice activities, and emergency evacuation procedures.
    • Assist in maintaining discipline throughout the student body and deal with special cases, as necessary.
    • Plan and implement professional development opportunities.
    • Serve with parents, faculty, and student groups, as requested, in advancing educational and related activities and objectives.
    • Maintain and model high standards of professionalism.
    • Model nondiscriminatory practices in all activities.
    • Attends special events held to recognize student achievement; attends school-sponsored activities, functions and athletic events.
    • Demonstrates professional growth and attends all meetings called or approved by the Principal or Superintendent
    • Performs other related duties as may be assigned by the Principal or Superintendent, to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit.
    PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
    Must have the ability to effectively communicate and interact with other staff and the public through the
    use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle, or feel objects and controls. Physical capability to effectively use and operate various items of office related equipment such as, but not limited to, a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions will be required.
