Manassas City Public Schools is Hiring a FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES TEACHER - MIDDLE SCHOOL PC 2532 FOR THE 2022-2023 SCHOOL YEAR (#1927) Near Manassas, VA

Middle School

Pay Grade: Instructional Salary Schedule Period of Employment: 10 months
FLSA Status: Exempt

Supervised by and/or Reports to: School Administration, K-12 CTE Supervisor

General Responsibilities:

Provides instruction and hands-on activities for students in nutrition, food preparation, early childhood development, financial literacy, sewing, and general life skills. Develop curriculum and lesson plans and teach students, individually or in groups.

Essential Duties:

  • Prepares daily instruction and activities to meet all course competencies.
  • Organizes learning activities to achieve specific concepts.
  • Selects and utilizes materials and resources appropriate for the students’ instructional levels.
  • Uses relevant technology to support and differentiate instruction.
  • Evaluates and documents students’ progress through testing, observation, and assessment of skills attained.
  • Assesses students’ learning on an ongoing basis and alters instruction to meet group/individual needs.
  • Develops summative tests of students’ learning and uses results for further student instruction, grading, and placement.
  • Provides a stimulating environment that encourages student participation, development of interpersonal skills, and an understanding of concepts of quality patient care.
  • Maintains order and encourages students to set and maintain high standards of behavior within the classroom and clinical settings and in accordance with division guidelines regarding pupil behavior.
  • Keeps accurate documentation of students’ attendance, schedules, and course requirements regarding hours of instruction and content.
  • Maintains accurate, complete, current, and correct records as required by law, district policy, and School Board Policies and Regulations.
  • Supervises and works directly with students in a classroom laboratory using appropriate production techniques and taking all necessary safety precautions to protect students from accidental injury.
  • Communicates effectively with students and staff affiliated with the course, including those at Manassas City Public Schools and in the community.
  • Provides leadership and organizes student organization activities for Family Career Community Leaders Association (FCCLA).
  • Provide and/or arrange for normal maintenance of kitchen, sewing, and child development equipment.
  • Attends and participates in district and school-level training programs, faculty, and department meetings as required.
  • Establishes cooperative relationships with the students and their families.
  • Develops effective working relationships with peers, supervisors, and administrators.
  • Demonstrates commitment to continued professional growth and development.
  • Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials, and facilities.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requisite Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Ability to deliver instruction using active learning methods that accommodate different learning styles.
  • Ability to plan, select, prepare, and implement appropriate active learning activities to meet all course competencies.
  • Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrates effective knowledge of and use of curriculum content (subject matter and skills) associate with the instructional assignment.
  • Demonstrates effective knowledge and use of instructional facilities, equipment, and materials.
  • Demonstrates effective interpersonal relationships with a diverse population of faculty, staff, and students as individuals and in groups.
  • Demonstrates professional relationships with peers and specialists.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications, electronic learning platforms, and Google Docs.

 Requisite Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education in the Family and Consumer Sciences content area (Apparel/Textiles, Child Development, Foods/Nutrition, Interior Design).
  • Must possess or be eligible for a Virginia Teaching License with an endorsement in Family and Consumer Sciences.
  • Experience teaching in a CTE related field for a minimum of 3 years (preferred).
  • Ability to build relationships effectively and professionally with families and students.
  • Experience developing and implementing curriculum.
  • Proven ability to maintain a safe and studious classroom environment.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills.
  • Experience in computer technology preferred or desirable and/or willing to pursue appropriate technology training as required by position.

Physical Requirements:


Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact as normally defined by the ability to see, read, talk, hear, handle or feel objects and controls. Physically capable of effectively using and operating various items of office related equipment, such as, but not limited to: a personal computer, calculator, copier, and fax machine. Some climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, or repetitive motions required.
