The Portland Press Herald/Maine Sunday Telegram seeks an accomplished journalist to serve as assistant opinion editor. We are an ambitious news organization with high standards, and we need a superb editor for this critically important role.
The assistant opinion editor helps shape the Press Herald’s positions and messages; works with the opinion editor to publish compelling work on our website and digital platforms; suggests new ideas and fresh ways of engaging with our readers digitally and virtually; helps oversee a provocative and timely Sunday perspectives section; writes editorials; works with freelance columnists and contributing writers; selects and edits letters to the editor; chooses syndicated and wire opinion pieces for publication; engages with readers and the community, both online and in person; and participates in editorial board meetings, sometimes with community leaders, politicians and others.
Successful candidates will have several years of journalism experience, though not necessarily in the opinion or editorial page sphere. Candidates must be fluent in American politics and world/national news, and must pay extremely close attention to Maine news and events. The assistant opinion editor must be able a sharp writer and line editor who can work fast and juggle a lot while maintaining accuracy and adhering to style.
Top candidates will be able to speak knowledgeably about the Press Herald’s opinion journalism and offer creative ideas for improving it, enhancing it digitally and engaging readers.
