JOB DESCRIPTION

JOB TITLE: ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL

Reports To: Building Principal

Primary Purpose: Assist the principal in directing and managing the instructional program and assist in

supervision of operations and personnel at campus level. Assist the principal in providing leadership to ensure high standards of instructional service. Assist in overseeing compliance with district policies, success of instructional programs and operation of all campus activities.

Qualifications:

Education/Certification:

Master’s Degree

Arkansas certification for appropriate assistant principalship assignment

Valid Arkansas teaching certificate

Special Knowledge/Skills:

Working knowledge of curriculum and instruction

Ability to evaluate instructional program and teaching effectiveness

Ability to manage budget and personnel

Ability to coordinate campus functions

Ability to interpret policy, procedures and data

Strong organizational, communication, public relations and interpersonal skills

Experience

Three years as a classroom teacher

Major Responsibilities and Duties:

Instructional Management

 1. Assist in monitoring instructional and managerial process to ensure that program activities are

related to program outcomes.

 2. Assist in providing instructional resources and materials to support teaching staff in accomplishing

instructional goals.

 3. Frequently consult with staff about planning, operation, supervision and evaluation of campus

educational programs. Include students and community representatives when appropriate.

 4. Assist the principal to ensure that curriculum renewal is continuous and responsive to student

needs.

School or Organization Moral

1. Communicate effectively with students, staff, parents and community projecting the positive image

needed to enhance the school mission.

 2. Foster collegiality and team building among staff members to maintain a safe environment.

 3. Provide for two-way communication with superintendent, principal, staff, students, parents and

community.

 4. Communicate and promote expectations for high-level performance to staff and students.

Recognize excellence and achievement.

 5. Resolve conflict in a timely manner.

School or Organization Improvement

 1. Participate in the development of campus improvement plans with staff, parents and community

members.

 2. Assist in building a common vision for school improvement with staff. Assist in planning activities and

putting programs in place with staff to ensure attainment of school’s mission.

 3. Assist in identifying, analyzing and applying research findings to promote school improvement.

Personnel Management

 1. Assist in interviewing, selecting and orienting new staff.

 2. Assist in the supervision of staff by observing instruction, recording observations and conducting

formative evaluation conferences.

 3. Assist in defining expectations for staff performance with regard to instructional strategies, classroom

management and communication with the community.

 4. Serve as an advisor in assigning and placing personnel.

 5. Assist the staff in planning professional developmental activities that will help them to accomplish

improvement goals.

Management of Fiscal, Administrative and Facilities Functions

 1. Comply with district policies and state and federal laws and regulations affecting the schools.

 2. Assist in determining budgetary needs and implement program within budget limits. Maintain fiscal

control.

 3. Assist in managing all campus facilities. Assist in the supervision of the maintenance of facilities to

ensure a clean, orderly and safe campus.

 4. Responsible for monitoring and recording student attendance and discipline along with the necessary

clerical assistance. Report excessive absences to the Attendance Officer accurately and timely.

Student Management

 1. Work with faculty and students to develop a student discipline management system that results in

positive student behavior and enhances the school climate.

 2. Ensure that school rules are uniformly observed and that student discipline is appropriate and equitable

in accordance with the “Maintaining a Good School Atmosphere” booklet and student handbook.

 3. Conduct conferences with parents, students and teachers concerning school and student issues.

Professional Growth and Development

 1. Develop professional skills appropriate to job assignment.

 2. Attend professional meetings to ensure awareness of new innovative programs and techniques.

 3. Demonstrate professional and ethical behavior. Serve as an instructional leader for campus staff.

 4. Communicate the school’s mission to the community and solicit its support in realizing the mission.

 5. Demonstrate awareness of school and community needs and initiate activities to meet those needs.

Supervisory Responsibilities

 1. Assist in the supervision and evaluation of staff assigned to campus including teachers, counselor(s),

aides, clerical staff and custodians.

 2. Supervise the school in the absence of the principal.
