Job Title: Chaplain - Catholic Job Location: Omaha Immediate Supervisor: Pastoral Care Manager JOB OVERVIEW Responsibilities include assessing spiritual needs of assigned patient/resident caseload and developing appropriate plans to meet those needs. Provides spiritual counseling, prepares for, assists with, and/or presents religious services. Assists and coordinates community clergy and other volunteers within the parameters established by the department. Work will be performed in an ethical and legal manner following organizational policies, processes, protocols and procedures. Responsible for quality service delivery and internal/external customer relations for Madonna as a whole, including upholding the mission and values for the department and facility. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (INFORMATION) 1. Manages, coordinates and maintains patient/resident caseload making assessments and developing plans to meet spiritual care needs. 2. Documents assessments and plans to meet spiritual needs. 3. Administers sacraments as appropriate to chaplain’s ministerial status at assigned hospitals and at MRH as required by need, request or departmental policy. 4. Communicates with and assesses residents and new admissions to assigned caseload/area. Follows through with appropriate response to need, i.e., prayer, counseling, sacraments, referral to other staff or patient/resident’s own minister/spiritual advisor. 5. Prepares for and/or conducts/assists with worship services as assigned by Department Manager. 6. Conducts visitations and completes documentation in order to appropriately follow through on referral requests. 7. Reports to and informs the Spiritual Care Manager of the status of patients and problems. 8. Communicates with community clergy to strengthen relationships and encourage visitations and clergy involvement to help meet the spiritual needs of all patients. 9. Attends patient care meetings upon request, serving as a member of the interdisciplinary team. 10. Knowledgeable and supportive of _Ethical and Religious Directives for Catholic Healthcare Institutions._ 11. Attends all mandatory education inservices and other assigned educational opportunities to meet departmental and organizational guidelines. 12. Maintains educational and ministerial standards necessary to adequately perform assigned duties, including ordination and endorsement as chaplain by appropriate ecclesiastical authority. 13. Fulfills rotational on-call duty. 14. Models accountability to the Core Values of Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital and incorporates the Core Values into his/her decision making and practice of ministry. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Light work - lifting up to 10 lbs. occasionally. Mobility required in order to perform visitation and counseling. Position requires long periods of standing, extensive walking and functioning at times in a high stress situation. At risk for contact with blood-borne pathogens while performing ministry involving direct contact with patient, including sacramental anointing, administration of Holy Communion, laying on of hands, and blessing, as appropriate to chaplain’s ministerial status. Requires sufficient sight to see and read reports and computer screen. Requires sufficient hearing and speaking to communicate by phone or in person. Mobility required for travel to scheduled events or meetings as needed. QUALIFICATIONS Graduate of 4 year college plus M.Div. or other theological education appropriate to ministerial status. Ordination as priest or deacon of the Roman Catholic Church, professed religious or lay with endorsement by ecclesiastical authority for ministry as a chaplain. Chaplaincy certification with the NACC or eligibility, and ministerial experience, some in a parish setting, preferred. Four units Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) or equivalent strongly preferred or willingness to undertake this commitment. Demonstrated skills and abilities related to conducting spiritual needs assessments, care planning and spiritual counseling. Team player with demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision and make good judgment decisions independently of others. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, as well as an ability to minister to individuals of diverse backgrounds, ideas and religious beliefs. Knowledge of Roman Catholic religious tradition, general knowledge of traditional Protestant mainline religions and ecumenical movements required. Education/experience in medical ethics preferred.
