Job Title: Director of Pharmacy Job Location: Lincoln Immediate Supervisor: VP Facilities Management System Status: Exempt JOB OVERVIEW Responsible for providing leadership resulting in excellent delivery of services, financial management, policy development, and overall organization and management of pharmacy activities, services, staff and managers. Plans, develops, and organizes according to facility policies, standards of practice of the profession, and State and Federal laws. Recommends, establishes, and implements innovative services, departmental goals and objectives, practice standards, and pharmacy policies. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS * Continually seeking opportunities to improve pharmacy delivery models, and programs, using concepts of innovation and change management. * Monitors medication costs, trends, volume, and utilization, and reports as requested to appropriate groups. * Evaluates, recommends, and implements policies and procedures related to Pharmacy Services. * Manages quality performance and improvement activities within the Pharmacy, assigning or participating in data collection, analysis, implementing appropriate process changes and monitoring outcomes achieved. * Targets quality improvement activities to include dispensing, distribution, safety, and clinical outcomes. * Establishes meaningful outcome indicators and measurement tools to evaluate outcomes and recommend improvements as indicated. * Collaborates with interdisciplinary team members to understand service expectations, initiate new services, and to use input to improve service delivery. * Oversees the coordination of distributive and clinical functions in collaboration with the Pharmacy Manager and Clinical Pharmacy Manager. These functions include: * Review of the physician order process to ensure safety and appropriateness for patient clinical condition, including for example age, weight, renal and hepatic function. * Accurate entry of patient medication orders including unique needs of specific populations such as pediatrics or oncology. * Review of patient medication profiles for diagnosis, allergies, duplications, interactions and drug regimen to maximize patient outcomes and to manage cost effectiveness and efficacy. * Maintain and periodically review the drug formulary considering physician requests, patient needs, and econotherapeutics. * Monitoring of medication therapies and communication with prescribers and the clinical teams. * Ensures accurate record keeping and monitors the controlled drug inventory, including inventory in the automated dispensing machines. * Complies with all local, State and Federal rules, regulations, and laws relating to the practice of pharmacy. * Oversees pharmacy billing and computer functions. Engages internal resources for periodic audits and updates. * Completes committee reports, quarterly reports and special projects as requested. * Develops pharmacy budget, adheres to operational and capital budget for the department. * Maintains personal accountability for enhancing job knowledge, sharpening skills and achieving professional developmental goals. Attends leadership classes and completes training classes as offered by Madonna. * Supervises and oversees pharmacy professional, clinical and technical staff so as to meet the strategic plan goals for Madonna Rehabilitation Hospitals as well as for the Department of Pharmacy * Directs and organizes training and competency programs, and evaluation of staff performance * Delegates responsibilities appropriate to the licensure, regulation, education and experience of staff. * Meets with staff routinely to maintain open communication, and rounds with direct reports in order to achieve the employee engagement expectations and goals. * Conducts pharmacy staff meetings and schedules inservices. * Mentors and communicates with staff on individual performance reviews. Oversees the performance management activities conducted by supervisory staff * Provides information and/or education regarding pharmacy services to pharmacy, medical, and nursing staff. * Actively participates in task forces, committees and performance improvement activities within Madonna Rehabilitation Hospital as pertinent to the services and activities of the Department of Pharmacy. * Uses input from rounding and patient experience data in order to address patient satisfaction and concerns. * Networks with external health care professionals to broaden scope of practice and improve patient care. * Participates in community affairs highlighting the hospital’s value to the community. * Oversees patient and staff education services. Coordinates and/or participates in patient education such as diabetes education, drug information/counseling, cardiac and stroke rehabilitation classes, outpatient prescription counseling. * Maintains proper inventory/purchasing levels and maintains the drug inventory. * Monitor costs and successes with use of various vendors and contracts. * Maintains a clean, organized and safe environment. Handles and operates all necessary equipment and performs required duties according to established safety standards to maintain compliance with regulations and prevent injury. * Operates copier, telephone, fax machine and a personal computer. Utilizes e-mail, word processing, presentation software, spreadsheet functions and any other pharmacy-specific IT systems and equipment. Assigns content experts to assist in maintenance of centralized and de-centralized equipment such as automatic dispensing machines. * Work will be performed in an ethical and legal manner following organizational policies, processes, protocols and procedures. Responsible for quality service delivery and internal/external customer relations for Madonna as a whole, including upholding the mission and values for the department and facility. PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS Physical Demands: Lift 25 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds; climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, stand, walk. Working Conditions: Work in a climate-controlled environment. Hazards include potential for exposure to hazardous chemotherapy or cytotoxic materials stored and prepared in the department; little risk of exposure to blood borne pathogens. Critical Demands: High work volume, pressure to provide emergency medications, constant interruptions, maintains and participates in an effective on?call schedule, and may participate in that schedule as needed. Retains 24/7 responsibility for Pharmacy services. Aptitudes: Must have excellent learning abilities, verbal skills, manual dexterity and color discrimination; typing and/or word processor proficiency are helpful. Requires sufficient sight to read reports and see computer screen. Requires sufficient hearing and speaking to communicate by phone or in person. QUALIFICATIONS Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm. D.) degree preferred; Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy degree with equivalent clinical experience required. Must possess a current active license, in good standing, to practice pharmacy in the State of Nebraska. Five years hospital practice experience is required. Sound professional judgment is required for skills that are technically sophisticated and intellectually challenging. Experience, configuration capabilities and skills in computer applications and automated dispensing systems. Ability to work independently and handle stress appropriately. Ability to handle multiple tasks, and adapt to changes in workload. Ability to set priorities, make critical decisions, and respond to client concerns. Fosters a team environment. Demonstrates excellent customer service skills.
