Position Title: Director for Curriculum and Instruction

Length of Work Yr: 12 months

Department: Educational Services

Reports To: District Office/Assistant Superintendent for Educational Services

GOAL:

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction is responsible for promoting learning experiences that inspire creativity, innovation, collaboration, and critical thinking.

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction is responsible for providing instructional leadership and promoting the educational development of teachers and administrators in guiding students toward the attainment of their potential for intellectual, emotional, physical and psychological growth in all curriculum areas.

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction is responsible for promoting and fostering understanding and developing support for standards and assessment; facilitating the development of curricular standards; leading all planning efforts in curricular review and revisions and identifying/seeking resources to support standards based instruction and assessment; assisting classroom teachers, school-level personnel, and district directors in developing and implementing strategies to broaden access to gifted services and advanced supports; working effectively with all staff members to assure student educational success.

The Director of Curriculum and Instruction is responsible for collaboration with federal and state grant funding and program focus.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Other duties may be assigned.

Responsibilities shall include, but not be limited to, the following:

  • Focuses all decisions on student success as the first consideration in alignment with District goals and curriculum standards
  • Collaborates with the Director of Research and Assessment to operationalize and align schools with the District Strategic Plan.
  • Assists classroom teachers, school-level personnel, and district directors in developing and implementing strategies to broaden access to gifted services and advanced support.
  • Works collaboratively in the review and revision process in the study and development of Madison curriculum as defined in Board Policy
  • Plans calendar, budget and processes for the selection of appropriate adopted curriculum and supplemental materials
  • Facilitates and collaborates with the review and revision process to support curricular initiatives and implementation of professional development
  • Leads the development of new teacher orientation programs for the support of teachers during their first three years of employment in Madison 
  • Provides coaching and professional development to assistant principals.
  • Provides training on teacher evaluation instrument to qualified evaluators.
  • Works productively as a team member with the Educational Services Team, principals, the teaching staff and site based teams to enhance student learning
  • Serves as a support to teachers, principals, support staff and district administrators
  • Assists in program evaluation efforts as requested and/or assigned
  • Establishes and monitors annual budgets for standards development, curriculum implementation, and instructional delivery strategies
  • Monitors and facilitates collaboration between the District and the private schools
  • Participates in the articulation process with feeder high schools as needed
  • Works cooperatively with principals and teachers to promote curriculum implementation and refinement
  • Engages in grant-writing activities and monitors external grants related to curriculum and instruction as assigned
  • Serves on district committees when requested or appropriate
  • Prepares reports for the Governing Board as needed
  • Continues the process of personal professional growth through attendance and participation in professional conferences, seminars and classes, which support the district goals and curricular standards
  • Performs other duties as assigned

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s Degree or higher in education from an accredited college or university required.
  • Educational background which reflects education in curriculum/instruction and learning theory.
  • School building level experience required.
  • Evidence of being a lifelong learner
  • Applicable Administrative Certifications as required and issued by Arizona State Department of Education Certification Department
  • Five years of successful teaching experience in grades K-8 or related experiences preferred
  • Administrative or related experiences 
  • Demonstrates knowledge of district curriculum programs and demographics; experience with Professional Learning Communities (PLC), and Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS)
  • Demonstrates a future-focused teaching and learning approach
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the educational, social and behavioral needs of students, adults and the community; experience with Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) 
  • Ability to communicate effectively with individuals and groups, both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work cooperatively and collaboratively with teachers, administrators and the community 
  • Ability to supervise and evaluate personnel
  • Demonstrates effective human relations skills
  • Demonstrates effective leadership skills
  • Ability to work cooperatively with state, federal and community agencies

LANGUAGE SKILLS:

  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures or governmental regulations.

  • Ability to write routine reports and correspondence in English.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format.
  • Ability to speak effectively with other employees and/or students in English.
  • Ability to present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, other employees and/or students in English.
  • Ability to speak and present effectively before vendors, administration and staff.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of administrators, managers,

  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies, or members of the business community.
  • Ability to effectively present information to administrators, top management, public groups/community, and Governing Board

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:

  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interests, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference and volume.
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
  • Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply financial concepts such as compound interest, time value of money, tax rates and discounts.

REASONING ABILITY:

  • Ability to apply simple understanding to carry out detailed but basic written and/or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a variety of concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists.
